Nissan’s new five-door Micra is getting ready for an all-out battle in the light car segment. Powered by a tiny 1.4-litre engine (72kW at 5,600rpm and 137Nm of torque at 3200rpm) coupled to a standard four-speed automatic, the Micra starts at just $14,990.
However it’s far from featureless, the car comes standard with air-conditioning, driver and front passenger airbags, anti-lock brakes, front active headrests, power windows, power mirrors, central locking with keyless entry, MP3 compatible single in-dash CD player and 60/40 split folding rear seat.
If that’s not enough, you can opt out for the $1700 Micra City Collection option pack which includes dual front side airbags and dual curtain airbags, teamed with a MP3 compatible 6-stack CD player and 15-inch alloy wheels.
“The Nissan Micra not only stands out from the crowd but its funky looks, great driving characteristics and incredible packaging give it the edge over its nearest competitors,” Nissan’s marketing general manager, Ross Booth.
Interestingly the car is not available with a manual transmission, we’d imagine Nissan could have set the entry price at $13,990 if a manual gearbox was on offer.
The reason behind the auto-only decision is most likely due to the Micra’s primary target - city dwellers. Who would want to be stuck in traffic in a manual car?
It’s a little hard to depict this baby Nissan, on one hand we can say it kind of looks funky, sexy and cool, but on the other hand we can say it looks rather ridiculous and we’d never buy one.
Despite its odd looks, the features alone should guarantee the Micra a succesful return to life.

Having driven an older version of this, it’s incredibly good on fuel as you’d expect, I wonder how much better the new one is

Compare this piece of junk with the new Mazda 2. I think Subaru and Nissan must collaborate on styling. Apart from the 350Z, there is not one good looking model on showroom floors today.

Have a look at www.maa.org/england/Signs/image005.htm (first pic I found of London taxi), and see what you think.
It might sell in GB as Brits would be used to seeing that shape, but here…. I’m not so sure.
Agree that there is some pt cruiser about it also, which for me is also not a good thing.

Much like SA rugby team. Fugly bunch, but packs a huge punch. Been around in SA for 3 years. Good fuel econ, loads of features for price and class. Nippy for a 1.4 with good handling response. Ideal for ladies in a hurry (in town).

What is it with the people within car companies who decide which models will be offered in Australia and which engine/transmission combinations will be offered?
Upon which planet do they reside?
I am frustrated to the point of rage by the decisions of these idiots, who have fixed in stone within their tiny minds ideas such as: Australians do not want diesels; if Australians do want diesels they do not want automatic transmissions; and people who want performance cars do not want automatic transmissions.
If the Nissa Micra was offered with a tricked-up suspension, the turbocharged diesel that is available overseas and the constantly-variable transmission that is also available overseas, they would walk out of dealerships.
Small and economical does not have to be bland, boring and gutless.
One day someone in the car industry will pull their head out of their ass and give the market what people want to buy.
At present, there is not one car offered in Australia that I would want to buy.
Volkswagen came close with the 1.9 litre turbocharged diesel Polo, but some idiot decided to not offer the automatic transmission that is available with the same engine in the Golf.
Should I reward this obnoxious stupidity by spending an Extra $15,000 on a Golf? I think not.
Same deal with Nissan.
I am interested in a turbocharged diesel automatic Micra, but I cannot buy one in Australia.
Solution?
Pre-loved Japanese imports.
Do I care that the local industry will lose my business? Not a bit, because an industry that makes a conscious decision to not offer me what I want to buy does not deserve my business.

Took one for a spin the other day, and my attitude did a 180 lol.
You simply can’t beat $14990 for inner city driving, and even at 100km’s it feels suprisinly well planted, solid and stable. Plenty of zip for overtaking too.
Looks a lot better in real life, its almost 1/2 way to a new mini cooper, and feels like one especially from the inside.
While you wouldn’t fit 4 footballers into it, its got plenty of space.
also it has an arm rest for your left arm, so you can just sit back and chill when driving, or stuck in traffic.

Hey Guys, Wsup? Richard Hammond from the pommy car show Top Gear tried to test the tin top (folding metal roof) version.
He got about two blocks and just dumped it by the side of the road! He couldn’t stand it anymore than that! And that’s from a professional car tester! Must got sick of EVERYONE laughing at him in at THING!!!
Now you know why we coined the phrase “Nissan DON’T know how”! Yeah, don’t know how down right hideously UGLY that stupid THING is!!

Hey All,
I think your all being a bit harsh on the little car. I am a female and I own a 1995 Micra. I have flame decals on it along with mags and tinted windows and get alot of compliments on my little beast. I adore my little car and find it not only a pleasure to drive but great on petrol. It has NEVER let me down and parking is always a breeze.I have not had to repair anything on it apart from a window regulator which was boken by the previous owner.I do however think it is more targeted,and suited to female consumers who are after a small yet zippy little car.
Let me assure you i have certainly thrashed my little baby on several occasions,(once against a V8 Commodore which i left behind no problem)and am amazed that after so many years its still got enough grunt to get you where you want to be with no hassle.
I am thinking of trading in on the new model although the auto transmission is a bit of a turn off for myself.I will certainly be checking it out though if nothing else.

Aus gets a raw deal on this model - compared to europe you lot get only one engine, no manual box, no proper centre belt, no tach, no sliding rear seats.
get past it’s looks (which I personally like) and it’s a pretty decent drive. These things have been out so long in europe nobody gives them a second glance anymore….

I booked a Micra on the day i was made available in the showroom. From the past few months of usage of this car I should say.the following.
Engine- Beautiful
Gearbox- should have been a 5speed automatic, 4speed is not good enough on lowspeeds(i think they forgot citydriving = lowspeed)
suspension- good.
Interrior- Looks all right, But built quality is pathetic( reminds me of some low grade chineese import)at low revs i have vibrations from every part of the car.They should sack the designer and quality controller( probably procurement guy also)
Petrol consumption- No complaints at all
Headlights- good
Rear and front Wiper washer- it is a real sad story,Nissan dont believe in spraying water proparly on to the windscreen. ( procurement guy made some money here for sure). Wiper blades- (God help me to controll my temper!)
I feel if they take care of the above issues. They have a winner in hand. They better work on it.

The quailty is better than anything the Chinese have done thus far, besides its a real old model, it took near half-decade before it arrived into AUS.
Has the honour of being the cheapest NEW A/T car you can buy.
I would be intersted in the next model if priced the same and offered more kit etc

Comparing a “made in Japan” car with a chinese tin can might not be a good idea. As a customer I have some expectations about the car NIssan make. Over and above that if a car is made in Japan i expect it to be with out a fault and more attention givn to details.
It is not the cheapest. You can get a Hyundai Getz at a better prize.
I am reaching 7500km on my car and I am really hearing noises from everywhere. I feel I should be giving it for an early service and try to seel it later.

I have had one for three months and am very disappointed in a couple of areas. Fuel consumption around the city is abysmal - average 9.15 l/km. Complained to Nissan and dealer; not interested. Won’t get into 4th gear unless above 65kmh so around town only ever driving in 3rd. wind noise around rear window makes it sound like a door is half open.

I just bought one for $14880 drive away as a second car. People must remember that not all drivers are motoring enthusiasts, nor do they want nor care about performance cars.
For the price, the car drives well, is very manoevourable and pleasant to drive.
Fuel consumption is good without being sensational. I replaced a Mitsubishi Mirage (owned from new) that in many ways was a better car but it had 175K on it and wasn’t going to last forever. Mirage is low and wide and handles well accordingly. Also had a better auto gear box. However, in the city, there are advantages to high seating position in Micra and the car is beautifully flickable at city speeds.

Finally down the end people with sense. Half of the people up the top a utter idiots. There only happy with v8’s and ferrais. Its the modern world and different is in. We cant keep being obsessed with these huge cars because there near extiction. The micra is a great little car and is far from a coffin for god sakes! My mum owns one and she loves it. The fuel consumption is amazing and it only costts liek $40 to fill up. The micra is a very stylish car. And please dont bag chinese cars for your own good because in 15 years we will all drive them because they will be so relibel and well built. And have any of you actually sat in a chinese car? no.

Im getting my new nissan micra tomorrow and I cant wait! I took it for a test drive 2 weeks ago and I loved driving it. It is a hot little car and is perfect for all the things I need. Having said that, I also didnt have 25 grand to spend on a car and couldnt look past the micras price tag. I thought most of the other cars like the Getz were ugly and simply had boring old shapes and who wants a Yaris-a dime a dozen with twenty-something million of them out on Sydney’s streets! We’ll soon see who knocks them when you have to ride around with your girlfriends in them! Go the micra!!!!
