2010 International Engine of the Year awards

The coveted International Engine of the Year award details are out. Judged by a panel of 65 renowned motoring journalists from 32 countries, the award ceremony took place at 2pm yesterday at the 2010 Engine Expo in Stuttgart, Germany.

First up, Audi has received the award for best engine in the 2.0-litre to 3.0-litre category with its 2.5-litre TFSI five-cylinder.

The engine, available in the TT RS, boasts awesome power delivery, response and huge efficiency levels and a great soundtrack, while also outputting a stonking 250kW (lots for a five cylinder). It also registers an average fuel consumption of just 9.2L/100km. Simply outstanding figures which have proved quite tractable in the TT RS too, even pulling the car to 100km/h in just 4.6sec.

Picking up the 3.0-litre to 4.0-litre category award was, for the third year in a row, the BMW 4.0-litre M3 engine. This is now the 11th time an M3 has received an award from the ceremony since the awards began in 1999. The M3 even earned itself the overall International Engine of the Year award in 2001.

Receiving Best Performance Engine was, for the second year in a row, the Mecedes-Benz 6.2-litre AMG-built V8. The engine currently spends its time in AMG's C63, S63, SL63, CL63, E63, CLS63 and the ML63 four-wheel drive.

And lastly, the overall International Engine of the Year award for 2010 was, for the second year running, Volkswagen's 1.4-litre TSI. The engine is available in two Volkswagen models - the entry-level Jetta and various Golfs - outputting different power levels, from 90kW to 118kW to 125kW, depending on the model variant.

The sheer versatility, power and economy of the little engine has won the hearts of the judging panel once again. Mated to VW’s DSG twin-clutch, automatic gearbox, the engine emits just 144g CO2/km. The fuel consumption is also outstanding and rated at 6.2L/100km in 118kW form. With those figures, it’s little wonder that TSI twincharger has won again.
