2011 Audi RS3 spied with possible air brake

A prototype version of the upcoming Audi RS3 has been spotted on the Nürburgring minus the camouflage, giving us our best look yet at Audi's contribution to the superhatch market.

With ultra-aggressive flared air intakes flanking the trademark Audi grille, the new Audi RS3 certainly looks worthy of the coveted RS badge although one rather peculiar addition certainly had our photographer intrigued.

Audi has taken the surprising step of adding an air brake to the Audi RS3, with the rear spoiler seemingly flipping up during hard braking - similar to the way the air brake operates on the Bugatti Veyron.

Although it may not be that simple with our spy photographer mentioning that it could just as easily be a manufacturing fault and could fly off the car at any moment - although for the sake of performance we will stick to the air brake idea.

Current speculation suggests that under the bonnet lies a 2.5-litre TFSI five-cylinder engine borrowed from the Audi TT-RS which should develop more than 250kW.

Coupled with Audi's proven Quattro all-wheel-drive system, the new Audi RS3 should be a potent package to rival the likes of the Ford Focus RS and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X.
