Spirra; the affordable supercar?

When we think of Korean cars, the phrases 'slow', 'boring' and 'cheap' usually pop into mind. Lately though, Korean car makers have stepped up to the mark and challenged rivals successfully with packages such as the Hyundai i30, the Kia Soul and even the Hyundai i45 to some extent. What if you want something a little bit more... flamboyant, though? Never fear, the Spirra is here. Well, not yet.

The all-Korean Spirra is a rear-drive, mid-engined, lung-slung supercar and it's the first supercar Korea has ever made. It uses a 2.7L Hyundai V6 engine that can be had in various guises, which is great - if you don't really fancy the idea of backing into a hedge after a wet roundabout incident, then they offer a tame 130kW version.

But, if you're the kind of person who thinks their eyebrows are too slouched, then they also offer a 367kW twin turbo version, which is sure to raise them. It'll do the 0-100km/h sprint in just 3.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 310km/h.

The slick carbon fibre body is enveloped around a unique spaceframe chassis, so it certainly looks like a supercar should. The gearbox is a six-speed manual only, which keeps costs down both initially and from a long-term, servicing point of view.

The Spirra has had to hurdle some obstacles in its development though. The original concept was called the Proto Motors PS-II prototype. Proto Motors was then bought out by the Oullim Group and renamed Oullim Motors.

If plans go ahead, the Spirra should be available to the international market within the next few months. No word as to if it's ever going to be available here Australia though, but it's definitely one to look out for, especially if the US$100,000 price tag sticks.
