2011 Hyundai i40/i45 wagon spy photos

By Alborz Fallah |

With the Hyundai i45 now on sale in Australia, the Korean company has began the final stages of a complete model revamp. So it’s no surprise then that we have just been handed the very first spy photos of the Hyundai i40/i45 wagon by photographers in Europe.

The naming convention is getting somewhat confusing, from what we can gather Hyundai’s Korean made Sonata replacement (the one we get in Australia) is called i45, but the  i40 is Hyundai’s dedicated European car that is set to be unveiled towards the end of the year and go on sale in 2011. That will be made in the Czech Republic.

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata wagon, or Hyundai i40 wagon as it will most probably be called, is set to be available initially as a wagon only (Europe), followed by a sedan variant.

One of the few criticisms we had of the i45 was the lack of a diesel powerplant but the i40 is expected to be available with a derivative of Hyundai’s 2.2-Litre R-diesel engine. Some reports say it will also be available in America as a hybrid.

So far there is no confirmation from Hyundai Australia if we will see the European built i40 wagon here. Nonetheless, given the lack of wagon shapes in the medium-car segment, Hyundai’s only real competition will come from Mazda6 and Liberty wagon.

Hyundai Australia has been contacted for comment. Article will update once we hear back.

The Hyundai i20 will be the next model launched (to be here in a few weeks).

what are you saying? i30 is a hatchback, and i45 is a sedan.

      • Andronicus

no they were pointing out the most likely naming convention based on current hyundai practice, if/once this model hits AU shores.

“Hyundai’s only real competition will come from Mazda6 and Liberty wagon.” Errr, how about the Mondeo?

Looks like a smart wagon, should be more of them. Don’t underestimate Hyundia in the Fleet market place either, they are doing very well with I30cw.

They should bring it downunder. But judging on the sales of the 6 wagon and the Mondeo Wagon, it might not give them much confidence. The sedan is a cracking drive though. Not up to the 6 yet, but still fun for the everyday family man.

If its anything like Baji’s rendering in the other post, there are onto something decent!

The i45 needs a diesel asap. Not having one is a major product planning mistake. Why would I buy the hybrid version with it’s smaller boot, higher cost and inability to tow? Hyundai are building diesel engines with great spec.. So what do they do, oh, I know let’s go hybrid instead. I guess vw, peugeot and others breathe easy with a di petrol 4 only on offer and a less than inspiring hybrid coming later. Hyundai, make product decisions for Australia not nth America, and while you ate at it employ some decent suspension engineers.

The current Sonata has had a decent diesel in it for a while at a decent price, but where is the interest in that?

The photo on the bottom of this page, why is the speed limit sign covered? Can see it easily, it’s 20kph lol

    • Me

      mph perhaps?

I have a feeling that the rear end of this car will be very good looking.

      • filippo

It wouldn’t be mph. The UK is the only European country still using the medieval measurements (for no other reason than to annoy Brussels), yet the car is left-hand drive and the number plate (whilst obscured) has a white/blue colour that makes me think it is German or Italian.

You’ll notice in the 3rd photo that a red sign on the door is also blurred. They use similar software that google use for it’s street view, which automatically finds numbers and letters and blurs the area.
