Cosworth Subaru Impreza STI CS400 unveiled

By George Skentzos |

Cosworth has officially unveiled its Cosworth Subaru Impreza STI CS400 which boasts performance figures to rival most supercars.

The Cosworth incarnation of the revered STI develops a mammoth 295kW and 540Nm from the highly-modified 2.5-litre boxer engine, with acceleration to match a Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4.

The sprint from zero to 100km/h takes just 3.7 seconds which is way ahead of its traditional rivals, the Mitsubishi Evolution and Ford Focus RS, with an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h.

The upgraded engine has been blessed by the full Cosworth parts catalogue, including high-performance pistons, high-strength steel conrods, Cosworth-spec engine bearings, a redesigned head gasket and a high-pressure oil pump.

A bigger turbocharger with a new compressor design and wastegate actuator has also been bolted on with a custom exhaust fitted to match.

The suspension has been overhauled using parts from Bilstein and Eibach, with the car sitting 10mm lower than standard.

An AP Racing brake package sits behind new 18-inch wheels which widen the CS400′s track by 12mm over the standard STI.

The exterior upgrade is finished with a blacked-out front bumper, mesh grille and rear spoiler, plus a few Cosworth badges thrown in for good measure.

Just 75 examples of the Cosworth Subaru Impreza STI CS400 will be available, exclusively to the UK market.

3.7 seconds…..WOW great stuff and looks awesome.

  • Able

Piano black interior is MUCH better than the normal one! 0-62 in three point seven seconds (JC voice) is mightily impressive! It seems this is what the WRX STI should’ve always been

On another issue, I saw an Impreza XV in Gladesville, NSW yesterday and it’s the ugliest car I’ve ever seen in my life, and no I’m not exaggerating! It’s awful!

    • Simon

I remember the TG episode where Clarkson was in an EVO 8 FQ400 0-100 in 3.5 and kept up with a Lambo Murcielago, which does 0-100 in 3.7, around a race track. All this despite being only 2.0L.
Seems like the Cosworth effort is 2 evo models late.
But I do like that interior!

      • Tim

FQ400 is in no comparison to a regular STi. This and the new FQ should battle, but the numbers and straight line peformance would tip it into STi’s favour.

        • Simon

You are missing the point completely. This story is NOT about a regular STI. It is a tuned and modified STI by Cosworth.
Therefore the comparison is extremely valid.

  • Technofreak

I would hate to own a standard WRX having seen this one! This car looks like it’s serious and not some frumpy lard ass! LOL

  • Vibe

YES YES YES and more YES!

SOOOO much better than the regular WRX.

  • Jimmy James

No mention of the price in the article…which is an eye watering 50,000 pounds sterling…if we got it here you wouldnt get change out of $100k. Yeeeouch!

  • zahmad

    A rocketship!

  • Steven

I want to see more of those seats!

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au Anthony Crawford

I’ll take one if they come in a sedan body.

    • Simon

      I see CA pays well!

  • Frenchie

Still got the cheap and nasty tail lamps.

    • HAL

mate, come on, who really cares about the bloody tail lamps? I think the performance is the defining feature.

  • Flying High

Bless you oh most revered Cosworth the Great.

We humbly appeal to your good nature to appoint us mere Down Underans with an example to purchase here in the land of wide open spaces, ridiculously low speed limits and ever more greedy ill informed revenue raising government enterprises.

Bring the Cosworth STi here and the buyers will most definitely come…

  • Shak

We are the Second largest market outside of Japan for Subaru, so youd think we’d be getting the interesting Special editions.

    • LessQQ

      Why? Because Cosworth is Australian?

lol no, Cosworth is British, of course they’d keep the good stuff to themselves.

      logic ftw.

  • yowza

    looks tough as.

But some here… you guys do know, you can make your standard STi by just lowering it and getting fatter wheels or increasing the offset. Its a tough looking car already, the STi is, just need to do some tuning here and there…

The performance though, you have to spend extra 50K to match hehe.

  • Yeti

Do you think Subaru will have a DSG type sytem? It would have been a faster car.

  • Hung Low

I just saw a Golf Gti get sucked into the bonnet scoop and spat out the exhaust!

    • Hung Low

I got the response I wanted from a VW fanboy that took the bait! The Gti has been compared to the WRX numerous times on here and declared a winner because it is a better everday driver even though it is so far behind in performance in a performance hatch comparison.
You said I has a stupid thing to say, but you ended up comparing it to a APR Golf? The rest of your excuses are pure dribble as well. Imagine the bum dragging APR Golf with people on board! Lets praise this STi for what it is!

      • http://caradvice.com.au V Dub

Hung low in life i like picking on you cause your the low life on car advice and everyone else feels the same about u . And if u only did a search on 2010 wrx vs gti on track you would understand that the gti is faster by 2.500sec . straght line speed is nothing if u can’t turn in first corner .

      • Simon

Absolutely Hung, this thing would chew up and spit out most cars. But comparing this to a GTI is absurd. Even the soon to be released Golf R isn’t in the same category considering the highly modified nature of this beasty.
Kind of like comparing a Hamann M5 to an SS commodore.

        • Hung Low

Where did I compare it to a Gti Simon? I made a statement using the Gti as an example but V Dub with his out of control estrogen levels got carried away the sad little Git!

          • Sprite

My appologies Hung, you are absolutely right.
You were just fighting fire with fire.

      • Sprite

Hung Low dont be moron the GTI dont compare!

  • http://caradvice.com.au V Dub

What a stupid thing to say . Gti has nothing to do with this car . yes the mark 6 gti is quicker then 2010 wrx on track but this is an sti tuned by cosworth so a better match up would be golf R tuned by APR zero to 100 4sec check mate

    • Joober@work

This does it in 3.7 so checkmate!

      • http://caradvice.com.au V Dub

i can read for my self it does it in 3.7 ! if only you could understand what 3 tenths is . the ugly looking rex could have 10 liters of fuel extra on board to carry around so there goes 3.7 to 4.0 extra person in car 4.5 . 3 adults in car and your so called 3.7 goes up to 5.8. this is the real world to achieve 3.7 cosworth would done that time at 5am in morning waited 2 or 3 weeks for the right temp . Picked the most perfect tarmac and only run with 5 lt of ful for 1 run

        • Joober@work

And you don’t think if you take all this into account the APR GolfR would be the same? WOuld you be so kind to provide a reference 0-100 for the APR GolfR, I would assume this is a stage3 Golf…

      • James Cortez

Only 295 KW out of 2,457 cc?? Embarassing. EVO X FQ400 produces 300 KW out of 1,998 cc. Same story about the torque. EVO X 511 Nm and This so called
“tuned” Sti only 540 Nm. Quick math says just to MATCH the EVO (not beating it in the power and torque figures) this Subie should put out 369 KW and 629 NM

  • davie

the interior looks a lot better in black on black

  • Trump

Is that a shift light built into the top of the steering wheel?

  • Qikturbo

    Wow what power!
It looks the business.Great colour and wheels to match.
The Audi R8 V8 and V10,Audi TT Rs,EVO FQ 400 even the lesser powered Ford Focus RS 500 would be an interesting comparision.
It’s quite laughable that the Golf was mentioned. This WRX is a quasi super car,the pedestrian Golf would be absolutely crushed.NO! wait a minute!A chipped GTI(or”R”version) would slay this Cosworth WRX because the Golf would be magically catapulted into supercar performance territory ha!..ha!

    Worlds fastest daewoo Lanos!

    go daewoobaru!

  • Zandit

Am I the only one here who still thinks the Impreza looks like a dogs breakfast??
Doesn’t matter how much go it has under the bonnet, I would not fork out the dollars for something so unattractive
