2010 Skoda Superb Wagon launched in Australia

By Tim Beissmann |

Update: Skoda Superb Wagon Review.

Following its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the Czech-made Skoda Superb Wagon has joined the Australian line-up with an emphasis on practically, user-friendliness and exclusivity.

The new Superb wagon shares its dimensions exactly with the sedan (4838mm long, 1817mm wide, 1462mm high) although the standard roof rails increase the height to 1510mm.

Skoda claims the wagon’s loading capacity makes it a segment leader, with the luggage compartment holding 633 litres and expanding to 1865 litres with the rear seats folded down (the sedan manages 565/1670 litres).

And it’s in the back where Skoda has really gone to work on the wagon with a number of convenient features. A $790 option is the electrically operated tailgate with automatic retractable luggage compartment cover that rolls back to the middle position upon opening for easy access.

The luggage compartment also features an extendable boot floor which reaches out over the rear bumper with the tailgate open to make moving large items easier.

Lighting integrated into the tailgate is designed to illuminate both the boot and the whole area around the rear of the car, while a removable, rechargeable LED flashlight is located in the luggage compartment. Skoda has equipped it with a built-in magnet so it can be placed on the wagon’s body – especially useful in the event of a puncture.

The entire wagon range comes standard with Park Assist parallel parking system and front parking sensors, hill control and the same choice of direct-injection petrol and diesel drivetrains.

The 125TDI diesel generates 350Nm and comes with a six-speed DSG transmission, while the 118TSI cranks out 250Nm mated to the seven-speed DSG.

The top of the range 191FSI produces maximum torque of 350Nm and is matched to the six-speed DSG and all-wheel drive.

Other options include the all-new KESSY keyless locking, entry and start system which unlocks the doors when the handles are touched; fully electric two-piece panoramic sunroof which blocks out 90 percent of the heat from the sun; and technology packages that include touch screen and voice-controlled satellite navigation, 30GB hard disk for audio and navigation, six-disc CD/MP3 changer and armrest-mounted Media Device Interface.

  • ABMPSV

Excellent family car with huge boot. What we need now is Fabia and Yeti.

    • Gene

A funnier taunt I cannot think of. Well done Camry man!

      • Camry lover

The umbrella located for convenience in the door is also a commendable design feature.

My wife would just adore this feature, as she very much dislikes getting her hair wet during wet weather.

    • jojo

Probably the most sensible and stylish Skoda to date in Oz….but just like Tim says in his opening line-

The Czech-made Skoda Superb Wagon has joined the Australian line-up with an emphasis on practically, user-friendliness and EXCLUSIVITY.

And Exclusivity is a certainty with such poor sales of this marque downunder….could be a long gap between sightings on the road.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=668475019 Jake Williams

        WHO CARES!?

  • david jones

looks good just have to get past the badge snobs by the way KESSY is not all new has been available on Passats in Europe since 2006. Goes up against the Passat Wagon but bigger in size.

  • Able

I’d tap that! Elegance 2.0TDI with 18-inchers, panoramic roof and the electric tailgate would be nice, especially as sat-nav & leather are standard on Elegances.

Needs more sport however…Superb RS anyone? It’d be a cheaper Passat R36 (once you factor in the standard sat-nav etc)!

    • aurion lover

Able, word just out in czech land as of 2011 the 2.0 tfsi as in the rs will be available on superb , probably come here , but as usual with dsg only on superbs .

      • Able

Yeah I heard that too, but wouldn’t that replace the 1.8TSI? I’m not sure. A sporty Superb would be best with the Golf R’s high-output 2.0T or the Passat R36′s 3.6L V6 (itself just a higher-power version of the Superb’s V6) but I’d like to see Skoda give the Superb even more power. Maybe the Audi S4′s supercharged V6 or something, that’d be really cool (especially with some Audi-style wheels too)!

  • Mythfrances

WOW look at the rear leg room! its like a rolls royce almost. They need to get rid of the centre bulging part though.

    • Camski

That’s only possible if the car is high enough off the ground.

I’m assuming it’s the AWD shaft.

  • Tomas79

LOL, looks like this skoda is really causing some issues to someone!!

    • Able

Well look at the number of thumbs down on your comment, some people can’t bite the facts!

Yes I LOVE being arrogant, especially towards you idiots!

      • Able

        (Referring to Thomas79′s above comments)

  • Gene

This is the Skoda the makes the most sense out of all Skodas

  • Will

    LOL!!

Smithy, you really have a problem. What is your allegiance to?

As for the Superb; it has superior styling, more engine choice, superior drive-train options, and is better bolted together than the local knock-ups. This machine deserves to do well.

    • aurion lover

This is actually smarting looking than the camaurion , well done skoda , this could become the new toyota , very safe , no recalls , no mat slippage , economical and tons more space than the camaurion.

    • Able

In what way are the Carioun better than the Superb!?

      • Mike

@Camry lover, interestingly though Skoda feature regularly & highly in JD Power’s Owner Satisfaction survey.
2009 – Octavia was 1st in the small family car category and 13th overall (Superb wasn’t in the rankings as it was first made in 2008 and the survey looks at cars registered between 2006 and 2007).

Skoda itself was equal 4th with Toyota in the manufacturer league table behind Lexus, Honda and Merc.

      • Mike

I should also mention that they\’re also the only manufacturer to rank in the top 5 for 14 successive years.

BTW, I’m not a Skoda owner. I’m currently shopping for a new car & Skoda have come up as an option that look like they offer a lot of value for the price.

  • Hung Low

Best looking Skoda ever and they may sell some!

  • Camry lover

Mitch, that is quite a rude comment to those that actually utilise this admirable feature.

My wife suffers from back pain, and wagon tailgates are quite heavy and can extend high up from the ground.

For people such as my wife, they make access to the luggage compartment much easier on the spinal column. Škoda have implemented this feature to help out the large percentage of its buyers that would suffer from back pain. My wife and I know several other people with the same problem.

    • Shak

Also a smart option for when the kids need to get their bags for school or help with the groceries.

      • Camry lover

Exactly. Young children would not be able to reach the tailgate, and the taller children that could, may have difficulty pulling it closed due to its weight.

  • Hung Low

The colour matching of the plastic bumpers to body are shocking!
Why is that Will? I thought this was a top notch machine with high levels of QA!

    • Golfschwein

I noticed that, too. Then, later whilst out and about,I looked at a whole bunch of cars waiting to go through traffic lights and the problem is very wide spread, with anything from Commodores to a variety of modern, quality Jap cars affected.

    • Ian K.

I lived in Australia till DEC 2002 and still remember quality of plastic parts/dashboards/upholstery in cars made in Australia or imported from India and Thailand. Seems like it had very much improved since then – seeing your sense of quality and/or black humour :-) you probably work in quality department, when able to guess quality of painting from a few advertising photos (especially if these look like made with “aqua-effect look”.

  • Simon

One thing stops me from buying this.
    Premium fuel!
Fleet/company fuel cards are largely limited to regular unleaded. Sadly this is my position and means “no sale”.
Unfortunately, this is where the locally produced cars will win everytime.
I will probably go with a G6ET, albeit sedan.

    • nickdl

Yes go for the G6ET. Brilliant car!

  • Toxic_Horse

To expensive for a new brand in Australia.
I just don’t see these taking off.

    • Tomas79

One new brand to Australia, one of the oldest brans in the world!!

      • Tomas79

        Hung Low,
Please tell me exactly who designed what in the VAG group?!!

      • mmmm

‘the Milli Vanilli of car manufacturers?’

        BEST comment – EVER

        PMSL – you go Hung

      • My Cars Called T-Rex

And they still look like a Donkey and cart.

        • Tomas79

Well i suggest you hand in your driving licence, as obviously you are legally blind!!

          • My Cars Called T-Rex

Sorry, there are no pic’s of the donkey.

  • Will

    Hung Low; – Comment edited

The Skodas’ QA. is second to none. You are viewing a subtle two tone design feature. The materials involved also reflect light differently.

What interests me is that you should refer to such aesthetic feature as, ‘shocking’.

So what brand is your allegiance to?

    • Hung Low

      Hi Will,

Take a look at the older X-trails with whole plastic front guards, and even though a cheaper older generation car, the paint match is almost flawless unlike the Skoda pictured.

There are good and bad across the board so why limit one-selves to one brand unless you have a commercial interest in them…hey Wildo!

    • mmmm

‘a subtle two tone design feature’
if the salespeople use lines as silly as that to describe bad paint matching no wonder they sell so badly in Au.
but nearly as funny as hung’s milli vanilli line

      • Hung Lower

I noticed that the comment I made earlier which fits within the code of conduct has been removed! What the #@!#

        • Aaron

Hung, your fatal flaw was to make a legitimate negative comment on Skoda, the CA team will drag them.

Personally I don’t see something this ugly selling very well – oh thats right, they DON’T sell very well.

In fact the word is they’ve got until August to get the numbers up or be pulled from Australia.

          • Simon

Is that a fact or just “word”?
            It’s easy to speculate.

          • Tomas79

Purely just a troll falcadore salesman dis-intelligence…

  • Vibe

These have ACRES of rear legroom. I really hope they sell. And what’s with the ugly comments? It looks classy and upmarket.

And the vast majority of people in Australia don’t even know about Skoda.

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au Karl Peskett

Just a reminder to everyone – keep it clean and be nice.

Any comments contravening the Code of Conduct will be either edited or deleted, with offenders facing the prospect of being banned from commenting.

    • Camry lover

Thank you for that reminder Karl Peskett.

Some readers of this site are making terribly rude comments in the blog section.

Mitch stated: “$790 for being fat and lazy”, a commented that I found very rude to say the least.

Everyone should be treating each other with respect and dignity, and people must learn how to restrain themselves from hurling offensive remarks at other users.

In summary: differences in opinion are fine, but personal attacks against other readers/groups of people are not.

    • Hung Low

Sorry Karl, I read your post after my retaliation to Wildo!

  • Will

Fleet car bogans/yobs…there goes the neighbourhood.

Simon, there are reasons that they don’t export Falcons to Europe, one being the Mondeo is a superior machine.

Toxic…the usual suspects…the Holden wagon has only won one design award, and surprise it was in Oz!

    LOL!!!

    • Simon

Will, I never mentioned exports. I’m simply stating that there is a big market for fleet/business cars. These cars by and large are only provided with regular petrol. This means VWAG (amongst others) is missing out on a large segment of the Australian car sales market.
I love the Superb and had it been able to run happily on 91RON I would have seriously looked at purchasing one.
Fact is I’m not going to buy one only to fill it up every week out of my own pocket when I have a fuel card for 91RON supplied by my work.
How I wish it were not so but alas that is life.
The Mondeo may be a better car than that FG but when you need a large car and want performance on 91RON your options are limited.

      • Tomas79

Simon, can you get diesel on your company card??
IF some, Superb also comes in diesel variant, as you might allready know?!

        • Simon

Thanks for the Tip Tomas79. It is a great suggestion EXCEPT I’m selling my diesel Passat to get something with more performance. Now that I don’t pay for fuel, consumption isn’t an issue, sadly octane is!

  • ohreally

it seems nothing for or against camries/aurions/skodas and nissan tiidas can be said, anywhere and any time on these message boards

Either we live in a world full of crazies, or some people just love to troll every comment thread

    BTW
A great looking wagon, I would prefer this over the calais sportwagon

  • Shak

I may just consider this when i trade in My SS-V. The fuel is beginning to hurt and im getting tired of the interior. With all that kit, and the wagons shaplier rear it is very high on my list.

    • Able

Sorry Camry, but someone who has a V8 Commodore is unlikely to buy a Camry Hybrid…

      • Shak

Thnak you Able. I have a loathing for toyota, and the only one of their vehicles i would consider is long dead. And i just read that comparo, and i still dont know why, as a Holden fan, Holden even bothered with the 3.0 SIDI. It cant acheive real wordl results and in my recent test drive, i had to rev it hard to get decent results, so its again defeats its purpose. The 3.6 is a honey on the other hand.

      • Shak

The Skoda is not in competition with a camry as it is two classes larger, has much more equipment, better quality, better drivetrains and all round is better. It arguably looks much better. As i stated, i did not want to sacrifice power but have to to cope with the fuel bills.

      • Able

        You’re welcome Shak :)

Camry Lover, Caurion is the name I came up for Toyota’s twins of which i CBF writing both names. This is the Superb wagon, not saloon, which immediately cancels out the Camry/Aurion (and you too I must admit…) as they fail to have a wagon. As Shak said, the Superb isn’t a Camry competitor, rather a bigger Aurion competitor, you want the Octavia as a Camry competitor. All are considered medium/large family cars.

I mean the mindset. V8 owners are prepared to pay for their fuel costs (or were when they bought it) and half the fuel use and half the performance isn’t likely to appeal to them. The Camry Hyrbid, as smart as it is, isn’t as exciting as a V8 Commodore to drive, and that’s the main reason as to me (if I were a V8 owner) not buying one.

“So then why would they buy a Škoda Superb? Both are front-wheel drive, both are of similar size, and both have similar performance figures across the range.” The Superb Shak is talking about is, I’m pretty sure, the V6 which is 4×4. The Superb is much bigger than a Camry, trust me! Similar performance? Ehhhhhh?

“There is no logic to your answer Able, as the Škoda is a competitor to the Camry, just like the Volkswagen Passat.” Passat = higher-class Aurion competitor

      • geegee

Camry lover- why are you pushing Toyota so much?? Are you working for Toyota HQ?? Sounds like it

    • Sprite

I thought you liked “masculine” rears shak!

“if you’re gonna stick your c0k up some guy’s bum you better be prepared to take some $#|t for it!”

    • My Cars Called T-Rex

      Don’t do it Shak.

  • Slow death

The sales statistics for the Skoda range for end of 2009-now are scary to say the least. They have declined in every month since October 2009 and are on a slippery slope.

Last month the figure were around 75 new cars registered, this is less than Citreon, Renault and Great Wall

This launch was put on the main Skoda website in Jan as having cars arriving in April for sale, we are now over half way through May and most dealers don’t have one and there has been NIL advertising for what i would consider their greatest launch since they arrived.

Looking at it objectively I wouldn’t be putting $50 dollars into one let alone $50,000.

Besides does anyone in that doesn’t consider themselves a car fan even know who they are??

    • Will

Slow, sewing the seeds of doubt, well lets expand for a moment.

General Motors is 60% owned by the US. Feds., it is insolvent. The head office for the pacific region is in China. Commodore is an orphan. The Australian subsidiary has not turned a profit in nearly a decade in spite of huge tax payer funded bail-outs and fleet sales. Should GM. hang on, where do you think the Commodore equivalent will be manufactured in 2015?

Until recently Ford had escaped a US Fed lone via taking out a massive loan some four years ago. It has been saved by its Euro division and is hanging on by the skin of its’ teeth. The Falcon will be replaced by the Taurus in 2013.

I could readily write a thesis on many brands marketed in Oz. focusing on woes, but I’m sure you get the jist.

Skoda is a jewel in the Volkswagen machine. Skoda’s success in world markets is astonishing. Volkswagen has its’ eyes open and no doubt were aware that selling a new brand in Oz would initially be a hard slog. Indeed Volkswagen is so strong it is able to support a struggling brand with Seat, a primary asset in maintaining good will in Europe. GM., well it ditched Pontiac. Where did that GTO go?

Your ‘objective’ assessment is somewhat blinkered.

      • Doc

Im only guessing, but there is no way a car brand can survive with 75 sales with how cheap these Skodas sell for, no matter how good this car is.

        • Just Treading Water

Rounour has it August may be the drop dead date if sales cant be brought up to a sustainable level, with a current new model and all out advertising assult.
Look for VWAG’s budget SEAT brand to replace this ailing orphan of a brand in Australia.

  • pirakavezok

I have no doubts this Skoda (esp TDI) is a good car. Judging from the pictures of the exterior and the interior, I can say the build quality is probably top class. I’ll definitely consider this car if I am looking for a load lugger.
Question : this brand is unknown and is selling in very low numbers. How can you entice car buyers to “take the plunge” if the selling price is almost at the same level as the locally well known brands with comparable specs?

  • aurion lover

Hey camry lover check out J D POWER UK ,ratings , skoda came in just behind lexus .

The superb is a classier car than the camaurion , no comparison different price class , higher specs .

  • ABMPSV

I can see the problem here with people putting down Skoda. Some of them never heard of Skoda but they think they are experts, than people saw Skoda and come up with comments to put this car down and only very few driven the car. I had Skoda in Europe and my brother drive one too. It is very good car that is a fact. I wonder if they got the same comment about Audi because nearly everythign is the same except the body. Skoda is sold in 98 countries.

  • aurion lover

To save time i have listed the top 7 2009

    1 lexus
    2 honda
    3 mercedes
    4 skoda
    5 toyota
    6 jaguar
    7 mini etc

please note this is june 2009 , this result may change this june after the fiasco of toyota’s recall nightmare

  • toxic_horse

I am not saying Skoda is a bad car. And yes i have driven several in Europe where they are are a every day car.
While there is nothing wrong with Skoda, I just don’t see the average punter forking out 40 Grand+ for a wagon from a company they are not farmiliar with.

To get a foothold in a new market car companys need to offer value.

    • ABMPSV

This car is value for money. Same think happened in England when Skoda started selling there. People who bought early they mad nice “profit”. Here price starts from $38,990 for the Ambition 118TSI to $57,990 for the Elegance 4×4 V6 191FSI. In Germany for the same car is from 29,550 Euro = $45,190 to 39,650Euro = $60,640 for Elegance V6. If I would be you I buy it now. Best time to buy is end of June.

  • Able

Hey Will, saw an e-mail yesterday that I shouldnt have, seems a whole of brand “Run-out Sale” could be on the cards. Personally not looking foward to selling budget SEATs when our yard switches over.
Heard anything up your way at your yard?

    • Doc

Seats will probably be a better fit for Australia.

    • Able

This is clearly not the same Able as me.

And this is EXACTLY the type of troll, type of loser that persists on this website. They are SO sad that they actually post as a different name just to bring some sort or annoyance or even stop a Skoda sale or two. I just don’t see the logic. I’d like to know why such a stir is caused with Skoda. How come Dodge and Fiat (two re-introduced brands into Australia at around the same time as Skoda) don’t create such a fuss when reviews of them come about? I think maybe it’s because Dodges and Fiats are generally crap, whereas Skodas are genuinely good cars that threaten the established fold of rivals, and some people on this website cannot take that. I know some will deny it, but I reckon it’s true, and it’s not just because I own one either…

To the trolls I say this: GET A LIFE LOSERS!!!

      • Informant

Looks like someone is in serious damage control after obviously being caugt out by the boss….
Why deny it now, we all know that the Skoda brand is in serious trouble in Australia, despite the bucket loads of paid publicity, like these countless stories.

        Waiting for August …..

      • Tomas79

        Exactly able!!
The nut cases wheelnut and bavarian missile got already banned impersonating me and others!!

Anyway, they are showing us how much they fear the skoda brand by persisting to troll the skoda articles on this and others sites…

        • Tomas79

Can’t wait the day the trolls Patrick and Lisa (Wheelnut and Bavarian Missile) make the headline and get picked up by the police for public nuisance.

Like that other troll did who was vandalising the tribute page on facebook!

Maybe then we will be able to have a more intelligent discussion on this and other Australian car websites…

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=668475019 Jake Williams

I find the car situation in Australia alot like the people situation in Australia, racist!

Had a close look at the combi today , the quality is very high ,almost audi ,and definataly as good as VW , this will cause concern for passat wagon , the space is huge , rear seat legroom is amazing , i had front seat back as iam 182cm , lolling space in the rear .

  • http://bugatti aurion lover

Had a close look at the combi today , the quality and finish is very high almost audi , definately as good as VW the passat wagon will have problems because this is huge .

Skoda Superb Stationwagon – Top Gear Luxury car of the year(2009).That pretty much sums it up , i mean poms choosing this over Jag or Land Rover.

Test drove the V6 in comparison to the new GT Liberty…well I thought comming from the same family it would be more like the VW Passat R36, which I also test drove…not…. more like a sponge. Soft suspension an dopey throttle response even compared to the Liberty with tubo lag. Nice inside on par or slightly better than the Subie, price was beter on the Subie as it had better fleet discount. The fleet company were not entirely happy about the Skoda and a 5 year lease as they had no data on resale. I would say for your average punter this is a great car but if you are looking for something with a bit of a performace edge go for the VW R36 or the Liberty GT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=668475019 Jake Williams

Well the Superb V6 isn’t meant to be the performance variant, it’s more like the Liberty 3.6R and Passat V6, the top of the range normal car. Hopefully the Superb RS will happen. And if the softness was such a problem, try the optional sports suspension!

  • http://caradvice.com.au Skoda lover

I bought a superb sedan in March this year after looking at new cars for 8 months.. What can I say.. I love it..I don’t care what the resale is.. I know that in 5 years time this well build car will still be in as new condition because I look after my cars.. But having said that this car in sedan and wagon have won so many awards that they must be doing something right. Wasn’t it also in the top 4 cars in some Australian car awards this year? I think Vw won it (They own Skoda)..lol Well I know for a fact that since I bought this car 4 people I know have also bought a Skoda.. So this is how it all happens.. Word of mouth and off it goes..

    Love my Skoda…

  • Golfschwein

The dark bumper section makes it look like Homer Simpson. I’m not being unkind. I love the Superb and would love to justify one of these, but the fact is that the Golf is all I need.

  • Dino

would the skoda superb’s handling be much improved by the sports suspension option on the 125tdi? or would this cause a too hard a ride in general?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=668475019 Jake Williams

Of course the handling would be improved and I’m not sure about the ride. Some journos said it’s a little hard (in the V6 mind you) but that’s the only negative about the car. Try it in person, one person’s judgement is very different to another’s!

  • Ryan Robertson

I am a happy owner of a Skoda Superb V6 sedan. Amazing car!!! I can confidently say that it’s the best car in Australia for the money! It’s easily up there with the BMW 5 series or the Audi A6.
