2010 BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible receive M Sport Style

By Chris Anderson-Peters |

BMW Australia has announced the June arrival of a sportier redesigned 3 Series Coupe and Convertible with a new 335i M Sport model topping the new M range.

Powered by a new 3.0-litre turbocharged engine, the BMW 335i M Sport delivers the same 225kW of power and 400Nm of torque as its 335i predecessor, sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 5.4 seconds.

A refreshed sporty exterior design showcases a full aerodynamic M Sport body kit with 19-inch double spoke light alloy wheels, while inside, M Sport doorsills, a Sports multi-function steering wheel and the option of lowered M Sport suspension.

BMW Group Australia Managing Director, Starvo Yallouridis says the new look M Sport brand will see it continue to remain the benchmark in their class.

“The M Sport brand is an icon in the world of sports sedans, coupes and convertibles…it was fitting to build upon that with the new 3 Series Coupe and Convertible and give the cars their own distinctive performance personality,” says Yallouridis.

Yallouridis highlighted the redesigned front, rear and side features and the inclusion the fitment of Auto Stop/Start for the first time to an M3, has given the M range an edge over the competition.

A substantially restyled of the 335i M Sport, 320d, 325i and 330d models, features a redesigned front bumper and bonnet with a wider BMW kidney grille.

Customers have an even wider choice of exterior colour options with three new exterior metallic paint colours.

Performance has also been enhanced to match the sporting styling of the new 3 Series Coupe and Convertible, with an upgraded 2.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder powerplant in the 320d, which delivers 5kW more power and 30Nm more torque combined with reduced fuel consumption.

Generating a maximum power of 135kW at 400rpm and peak torque of 380Nm between 1900rpm – 2750rpm, the new 320d offers a combined fuel consumption of 4.7l/100km for the Coupe and 5.1l/100km for the Convertible.

This is the first time the 320d has been offered with a manual gearbox and its fitment provides an opportunity to expand the application of BMW’s EfficientDynamics technologies, including the standard Auto Stop/Start function.

Topping the BMW 3 Series range is the new M3. With improved efficiency through the application of the Auto Stop/ Start technology, the 309kW/400Nm 4.0-litre Automatic M3 coupe now delivers a combined fuel consumption of 11.2l/100km.

Standard features across the 3 series range include cruise control, climate control, power windows and heated exterior mirrors, dual front, side and full length side curtain airbags, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Antilock Braking System (ABS) with brake assist and Cornering Brake Control (CBC), active front head restraints, Rain Sensor and rear Park Distance Control (PDC).

Additional features that come standard on the BMW 335I and M series but optional on the Innovations Package for the 320d, 325i and 330d, include Comfort Access System, Adaptive Headlights, automatic folding exterior mirrors, BMW Professional Navigation System, Voice Control and HiFi Loudspeaker system.

Funny how a few styling tweaks improves the overall look so much. I like it much more than the previous generation.

    • Phil

Was thinking exactly the opposite. Slantier wider nose looks odd, and the profile/rear view is crying out for a subtle spoiler. It’s starting to get those EA Falcon lines that one of the Mercs ended up with.

    • Steve-Poyza

I agree. An even better looking car.

  • The Realist

    The pre-LCI E92s looked better.

Car Advice, please check your pricing – a 335i M Sport convertible is no where near $176,700.

Still the best looking BMW on the market at the moment IMO. I’d have any one of them, all of the engines are great.

If only BMW will get rid of the kidney grilles…

    • Devil’s Advocate

Yeah they should do that. While BMW remove their kidney grill Ford should get rid of the blue oval, Holden should ditch the Lion, Aston Martin should change the shape of their grill, Rolls Royce should change their chrome vertical bar grill to a black horizontal barred circle with no silver lady, etc etc because that amounts to the same thing. At least BMW are one of the very few brands that don’t keep changing their “corporate face/identity” all the time like the majority of the other manufacturers have, like it or loathe it…

you can get upgrades on cars like leather seats and all that stuff buy why don’t car manufacturers offer several bodykits and lights and stuff?

    • Radbloke

      They do.

      • DL

You can’t get them properly riced up straight from the factory though

  • Marc

mmmh, not sure what’s going on with BMW design at the moment. Something about the proportions of the E92/3 that’s never been quite right. The new front with full width extra wide lower air intakes does it no favours.

    • Leon

IMO the E92 is the best looking car under 200k on the market. Maybe the E93′s rear end has looked slightly off due to the convertible roof needing to go somewhere but you’d be hard pressed to find a better looking vehicle. In the flesh I’m constantly taking a second look when I see them around.

The A5 needs 19s to look good due to the length and width of the car whereas the E92 looks great with either the 18″ and 19″ wheels. As a package you’d be hard pressed to find a nicer ride for the price.

No way man, E-class coupe for me…until jag decides to pull its finger out and build an affordable coupe

  • Omale

I guess this solves one mystery. The top model in the 1 Series is likely to be branded 135i M Sport rather than M1 or 1M.

  • chappy

Funny how their taking about the M sport but all the photos on this topic is the standard model not showing the M sport model its a great car the 335m sport is very fast and handles unbelievable which i own.

    Hummmm…
Is this 320d single turbo diesel?
Twin turbo 123d is about $5k cheaper.
    Very interesting.

The E92/E93 is the first 2-door 3 Series with a separate design from the sedan unlike previous models which simply subtracted a couple of doors. The first iteration made it look more appealing to draw extra buyers who are considering the sedan due to better practicality. The 4-door E90′s look is a bit iffy but patronage is still very good. It’s still the small luxury car benchmark even if may be the least handsome.

While the sedan’s facelift is a welcome change, I don’t like the altered look of the coupe/convertible. I find it a simpler design. They got it right the first time so why change it?
