1974 Porsche 911 chases Nissan GT-R in Targa Tasmania 2010

By George Skentzos |

In this clip from the 2010 Targa Tasmania campaign, Tony Quinn in his 2009 Nissan GT-R overtakes Rex Broadbent in his 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera RS – who then decides to give chase.

Despite the 34 year age gap between his car and the Nissan GT-R, Broadbent proves technology is no substitute for skill – keeping the tail lights of the GT-R in his sights for the entire stage.

Yeah… fantastic drive by 911RS but I don’t know if you can draw such conclusions. We know nothing of the ability of the GTR driver or how hard (if at all) he was pushing.

Tony Quinn (GTR Driver) is a decent steerer, won 2009 event by 6 minutes, plus targa new zealand and given he finished third this year I would gather he was pushing pretty hard to catch the skelta and lamborghini.

Quinn also reguarly competed in the porsche cup event including at bathurst. So pretty safe to say he is experienced.

I am not familiar with the difference, but this was a v spec model also. Broadbent aint exactly a spring chicken either from memory

What a great bit of road. Good driving in the porsche, but looking at how much braking was going on on the GTR I don’t think he was driving quite as hard.

Haha, that was pretty awesome, that there pretty much sums up Targa.

From the 4-min mark onwards he really does start pushing.

Could most definetly bet on the fact that he would have had a million times more fun in the RS than the GTR, no electronics, turbos or 4WD.

  • Go Porsche!

    Clearly the better driver…

Hmmm, I would be more impressed if the Porshe actually chased and caught up to the GTR.

But really the GTR was much faster, it past the porsche on a bend, and then put a 200m gap on it within minutes, only to be visible when slowing through the tight turns. All race cars compress up throught the tight turns, where was the GTR on the fast bits? Goooone……..

The co-driver mentions that the Porsche was driving conservatively to maintain a 3 minute lead, hence why he was overtaken.

The co-driver even says that there is “No need to race” to which Rex replies “Just having some fun”.

Is this the 2.7 or 3.0 model? I was interested too look at the stats. A RHD 1974 Carrera RS 3.0 (of which only 6 came too the UK) is for sale in the UK for 365 000 pounds. Also Road and Track in the US had the pleasure of putting a 3.0 carrera RS (from a gracious collector obviously) through it’s paces last year. Stats were 0 – 60 mph in 5.2 secs, 1/4 mile in just under 14. Nowhere near the GTR in reality but for a 36 year old car that is bloody impressive!

the guy giving directions sounds more annoying then the voice of a gps

The GTR was driven by Tony Quinn (2009 Targa Tas winner and 3rd in 2010) So no question of his driving ability compared to Broadbent’s 3.4L RS. Quinn was pushing hard, trying to make up for a 2 min deficit from the leader.

    Awesome!

“Don’t race him Rex…” very funny.

Rex Broadbent is a former Porsche Cup champ from the early 90′s has one of the Lambo’s brought out for targa a few years back for Stokell & Allenby in his garage.

As good as Quinn is as a driver with rally and race wins to his name Broadbent would have him covered.

Awesome videos. Both very cool cars that GT-R is quick as!
