Number Plate Worth $1 Million?

Next week’s Australian international Motor Show is expecting to make history with the auction of some prestigious number plates.

Shannons car insurance, which is in charge of the auctions, is hoping one wealthy individual will pay over one million dollars for the NSW number plate ‘6’.

“It is a number of years since a single digit NSW number plate went to auction and we are getting significant interest in it, as well as the other plates,” said Shannons National Auction Manager, Christophe Boribon. “I am confident we will see some record prices paid at the auction.”

The price might sound extreme to some, but at last year’s show, 50 rare vitreous enamel and 50 new Black Euro plates sold for a total of $4.1 million!

The auction will take place on final day of the Motor Show at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre on Sunday October 21 and all the RTA plates will be sold with no reserve prices.

Other noteworthy number plates set for sale include

‘78’ ($240,000-$320,000),
‘66666’ ($25900-$35,000),
‘228’ and ‘883’, ($50,000-$80,000)
‘2008’ and ‘2088’ ($35,000-$50,000)
’10,888’, ’20.222’ and ’20.888’ ($20,000-$30,000).

Well not quite a new keyboard I gave the key’s a clean with Mr sheen, now my finger slide off the F****ucker hitting the shift key instead I knew there was some sort of trick, guess more swearing than SHOUTING AHHHHHHHHHH FUKKKKKKKKK is the go around here, gee wiz it’s hard to keep the community happy so BLUDDY prim and proper these day’s…

nice woz. just harder to read caps, thats all. A mate of mine had a 5 digit NSW plate which he sold for $20000 at an auction. I’ve tried really hard but i just can’t work out for the life of me what the hell people see in old number plates to pay that much for them. The number wasn’t even significant in any way. People buy them as investments because the older they get the higher in value they get, but thats not the whole story because they only go up in value because people buy them! To think some people would be driving around in cars worth less than the number plate. Crazy crazy people.

NSW 6 was sold back in the early 80’s at the first NSW Plate auction. The hammer price was $50,500. In recent times NSW 2, 8 and 9 have all sold for megabux. They are only worth what someone is willing to pay on the day. At present there is a lot of play money around and number plates all over the country are seeing record prices as a result. ACT, Qld, SA and Vic prices are all going though the roof. The last NSW auction saw 100 plates sell for a total of approx $3.5 million. That’s an average of $35,000 each and only 50 of them were numerics. The other 50 were c#%p Euro customs.

What’s my point? I have no idea really except to say that if people have the money to waste, their going to waste it and will probably realise profit in the future doing it!
