HSV E Series Maloo Update

September 28, 2007 by George Skentzos

With earlier spy shots of HSV’s brutal E Series Maloo confirmed as authentic, our friends over at Australian LS1 Forums have yet again produced an exclusive with this rough spy shot which is reportedly the elusive rear end of the new Maloo.

vemaloorear2.jpg

Initial reactions toward the rear-end have been far from positive, understandably so considering the wraparound tail-lights condemned on the VE Ute have now found their way onto the tailgate.

“I will not be at all surprised if people buy the SS tailgate for the Maloo!” Said Kayman from LS1 Forums.

Current images of the E Series Maloo show from the B-Pillar forward it is a clone of its sedan cousin, although the remainder of the Maloo seems to take its styling cues from the 2001 HRT Ute Concept.

One thing for certain is the new E Series Maloo is sure to live up to its name as the fastest utility in the world.

I know what you mean Colonel Klink, any way it won’t be the fastest ute for verry long.

  2. 280zx says:

Sorry ill take back what i said earlier Klink..

  3. Adam [aka Mada] says:

I know this will have great performance, but i have to say that rear looks ugly so far, obviously i’ll wait for official pics, but so far…ugly.

  4. Me. says:

Will Holden Have a VE Tonner that has a sepprate tray?
The UTE is a bit short I find.

  5. Damo says:

Why are we only complaining about the shit taillights? It is also going to have shit weight distribution and handling with that much power at the rear and weight up the front.

  6. Toyota Paul says:

I agree Damo, Ive said this many times before… a ute and performance dont go well together. I witnessed this one time, watching an SS drag a Porsche… Porsche flies off the SS fishtails as the rear just cant get all that power down.

  7. rick Harris says:

No ME.there is no tray or one tonner for the Commode Ute. After spending a ridulous 1 Billion dollars to get a Commodore that is maybe just better than a BF Falcon i guess they ran out of money.

  8. Me. says:

Thats a shame for ‘Holdrolet’ the Orion has a sepprate tray ute. Looks like the only Holden to take on the orion ute is the Rodeo.

  9. snags says:

pfft just because a performance ute cant get its power down like a porsche is hardly a reason not to make them, they look good are practical and uniquely australian

  10. Me. says:

Snags, their engines are not Australian, they are imported.

  11. SRTargets says:

The car based ute is australian. who cares where the engine comes from. I dont.
If the eigine has the goods, it good in my book.

  12. troy says:

This will be an egomaniacs dream!!

I can see all the big bouncer types with black singlets and lots of tatts driving them to the gym now.

the tail lights look like the back end of the latest tarago…… hope it looks better in the metal.

  13. wheelnut says:

There really isnt that much to distinguish the Maloo from an SSV ute. HSV should have done more..
I would have like to have seen the rear flares from the HRT Concept make it onto the New VE Maloo – the bodykit on the HRT ute looks more agressive and more integrated.
They should have at least used the rolled front 1/4 panel from the HRT ute

As for the taillights – they should have used ones similar to the ones on the HSV sedans.. at least they look better than these

  14. Andrew M says:

whether it has grip in the back like it or not utes are the new 2 door sports cars of australia. they are a little more unique and different and they hold their resale a hell of a lot better than sedan equivalents. just throw a couple of bags of cement in the back to keep it down if it worries you.

  15. Bavarian Missile says:

Depending on the VW dragging the Uterus , I imagine he was just seeing how he could go up against a Porsche? Not everyone can drive fast car or bike, some cars are just a waist on their owners!

  16. Toyota Paul says:

Andrew.M lol and then add more weight, effectively offsetting the additional grip… in terms of helping acceleration.

Bavarian yes I know what he was doing, Im not saying ‘oh Holden bad cant even beat a Porsche!’, but I provided that example to highlight how the ute really does lack grip. All the way to 60km/h the rear end was ice skating, I only think it stopped because he laid off the power as he sh*t himself because he nearly hit the gutter.

  17. Andrew M says:

Paul missile is right some people musnt know how to drive. if he just kept into the throttle once it broke traction he was silly. he should have feathered of the throttle until he found traction or short shifted.
my guess is he thought he was soo good and invinceable he got too excited on the throttle to start with.
i mean you can take off quick in a ute with out bagging then up
and you can also bag em up in a porsche

paul the bag of cement comment was an old saying if you like where people would put a bag of cement in the back to keep it from bouncing around on the road

also you wouldnt add anymore weight than what it loses when it goes from being a sedan to a ute

  18. Toyota Paul says:

But the fact that you have to feather the throttle more is because its a ute, with less weight at the back!!! Although I agree I think the guy was retarded, the Porsche showed the ideal set up I THINK it was midengine/rear engine… it took off, no tyre spin, flew into the distance… as you would expect.

  19. Andrew M says:

dont forget any car can break traction that is the point i tried to make.
he should have never broke traction. its not like the car had no choice but not to break traction

  20. woz says:

This aint good, one word BLUDDY UGLY !!!!!! sorry thats two..

  21. Me. says:

How the hell are Holdrolet expecting their ute and wagon to sell well when they can’t carry as much as the VZ or the Ford

  22. Glen says:

cos ME Holden expect blind loyalty from there customers. But as they have found out that only lasts for a little while, the VE ute looks like someone took a gas-axe to a wagon with those wrap around lights. Hopefully Ford dont feel the need to do something stupid like that although i think the rear of the orion ute may be pretty similar to the current BF2.

  23. Andrew M says:

holden sells their utes to a different target. they are worried that if they release a trayback option people will view it as a dunger of a work rig.
it is too costly to develop a completly different platform like the tonner was. they wont design it like the falcon where you can choose your tray because they dont want the break in the tray behind the cab to affect its body lines.

bottom line holden aim for the show pony market where as ford aim at both the show ponies and still dont lose focus of pumping out a good work rig

There is 3 letters distinguishing the VE ute to any ute before it when it comes to traction. ESP which is standard on all models of the VE not just the Sports models. You can disable it momentarily to show off as you take off but it automatically jumps back in to helpits straight line performance and handling. The Porshe comment cannot be related to a VE only earlier moments. Do not take those rear tailights as gospel HSV as usual will do something spectacular.

There are 2 types of motorists. Those who drive HSV’s and those who wish they drove a HSV.

  25. wheelnut says:

Andrew M is right; Ford and Holden target different markets.. Ford focuses on tradies and Holden tend to aim at enthuisiasts which based on market trends makes more sense..

The ute was originally intended to be a fairly basic work vehicle.. not a luxury performance car etc However; over the past couple of years it has evolved into more of a status symbol; a lifestyle utility vehicle or LUV
    [to use toyota-speak]

In the past there was the old HQ ute which owners used to do anything and everything with.. they came in basic colours and had basic interiors [no leather or air con] You’d see an old ute with a couple of dents; covered in mud maybe even leaking oil or with a miss-fire etc but it would still be working hard carrying stock

Whereas today you have these High Spec models such as the Maloo or the Limited Edition Rip Curl ute with its pristine metallic paintwork and luxury interior etc
the owners of which would have a heart-attack if they found a slight scratch on it let alone a spec of mud .. they’d be out there straight away with the meguiars trying to get it off

The ute has reached the point where its idolised so much by so many people that we would rather leave it as it is rather than use it for its intended purpose.. No the ute is no longer a work vehicle it’s a two door sports car with a big boot.

  26. Andrew M says:

    wheel nut,
if ford has a number one seller in the falcon ute then wouldnt you say they are on the better path where they can attract both markets?

but yes you are dead right on what the modern day 2 door sports car is…..a ute
oh and apparently there is a limited edition craig lowndes ute due out pretty soon.
i know a bloke who has an ss ute with never a spec of dust on it. before he got in it after work he would take off his boots and put them in a cardboard box in the back, quick change of shirt etc too.
now i think he was a bit too anul, but yes utes are a lot of peoples pride and joy

  27. Bavarian Missile says:

Totally correct, gone are those days it seems that workmen all hot sweaty bulging muscles hot tanned bodies {now I am getting excited} driving an old Ute with all the tools thrown in the back are gone! Now it seems they have been swapped for metro sexual guys driving utes that pretend to be functional and look more like their trying to impress other guys with their 20 inch wheels, dumped to the ground NO2 bottles in the back ,colour coded interiors and spec paint jobs. The marketing companies for the the manufactures have a lot to answer for ,chicks chasing Utes with blokes in them, come on!!!!! Why would a chick be interested in a UTE,theres no where to put the shopping ! Lol Back in a couple of hours ,have to go wash Hubbys car,hes back tomorrow and will want it clean .

  28. ImportJap says:

“Why would a chick be interested in a UTE,theres no where to put the shopping !”

Hahahaha, brought a laugh to my face.

It sounds nice, but yeah, that tailgate is grasping at straws from a visuals perspective.

  29. Bavarian Missile says:

Anyone seen the new Holden Ute add ?

  30. Me. says:

    No, Not yet.

  31. Bavarian Missile says:

Tried doing a you tube search for it but not there yet,did find this on the VE series though.

  32. Me. says:

Holdrolet are good at subliminal bullsh!t on the media about saying they are the only Australian car. Their closest GM relatives, (Like Chevrolet) did that same subliminal thing Back in 1959, just see this clasic ad. GM are good at being subliminal see…
    http://www.uniquecarsandparts......let_07.htm

    This is a classic example.

  33. Andrew M says:

missile i saw the ute ad. they were flogging it during the footy GF.
looks like they are trying to sell it by a loyalty thing.
i reckon they could have had a better ad although the evolving computer stuff was pretty well done

  34. Me. says:

Hope Holden fans like the classic ‘59 chevrolet ad I posted, because holden is allmost Chevrolet. Thats why It’s called ‘Holdrolet’.

  35. the BigT says:

i wonder if they will even be able to change the fuel econimy because on the last one it ran 16ltrs per 100km so if it gonna be a nother fuel thirst holden as usall an anyway its nuthin special just a nother crap disign by holden atleast ford releases its utes the same time as the sedans

  36. wheelnut says:

A possible reason why Ford releases the ute at the same time as the sedan ould be because unlike Holden; Ford don’t have as great an export program. Therefore; they’re main focus is the local market.

The reason the ute was delayed was because Holden export and sell the Commodore and Statesman to the US and Middle East in such great numbers that it made sense to promote the Statesman ahead of the Ute. – The Statesman just won Middle East COTY again.

The ute is to be released next as there are plans to export it to the USA as a Pick-Up and maybe even the UK.
Finally will be the Wagon [about the same time as the series 2] as it’s unlikely to be exported due to the fact that there are no viable overseas markets.

However; if or when Ford is allowed to export the Falcon [which it should be it's as good a car as its UK and USA equivalents] expect the launches of the various models to be delayed slightly as well.

  37. Rocket3 says:

    The Big T,
Ford actually normally releases its utes a little later as well if there is a big change. When they changed to the AU there was almost an eight month delay to the Ute version due to the complexity of the new one tonne chassis design. as Ford have been refining this for so long now it will basically bolt straight under the new ute with very minor changes (there will be some). Not trying to help out holden here but manufacturers put the most money into the highest volume sellers first then the derivitives.

Plus you need something for each motor show dontcha.

  38. alec says:

Anyone who thinks a modern ute loses traction because it is light should go drive one over the weigh bridge!
The BA Ute with the Style Side Tray is heavier than the sedan and the Holden is about line ball with equivalent VY/VZ as it doesn’t have the Fords Half Chassis out back for the Tray.

They lose traction because they are suspended on ‘Load Carrying’ springs!

  39. Bavarian Missile says:

Hey Andrew I agree ,but as I have mentioned in my post a couple of days ago here the UTEs of today hardly have the reputation of those 20 years ago.The appeal has been changed by marketing companies.Morphing a functional UTE from years back to the VE of today was good to see though.

  40. Andrew M says:

    right on rocket3,
im a ford fan but to be fair to holden i dont think it is the export thing either but maybe aswell as the totally new design.
yep AU was delayed till the start of the next year because it was a totally new thing.
but holden still does seem to delay theirs a little bit longer. the VE will blow out its first candle before the ute comes. and then the VU ute came in at the end of 2000 i think which was 3 years after the sedan variant (VS) ended.
but if you go back a bit further in history the XF falcon ute ran till 1993. yep they leap frogged the EA

  41. Bavarian Missile says:

Check this out, just found the article on Car Point

Pontiac’s first road-registered G8 to be totalled has taken its driver on a wild ride

Pontiac has just lost its first G8 in action.

According to a report in the Aspen Daily News, a G8 driven by an Australian engineer took a tumble over a 45 degree embankment before hitting a boulder and flipping.

The G8 — basically the Holden Commodore in LHD form and with Pontiac styling cues will go on sale early in the new year.

This particular car was being driven in convoy along Colorado’s Highway 82 as part of an engineering evaluation when the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Rolf Glenk, a 41-year old engineer employed by GM, walked away from the accident with minor injuries, which were treated at the Aspen Valley Hospital.

The Colorado State Police has issued a citation for careless driving following Glenk’s admission that he fell asleep at the wheel.

Pontiac has marketed cars using the slogan “We build excitement” and it’s hard to think of a more exciting experience than riding a G8 down a 45 degree slope at open road speeds, headed for a boulder. Still, not something recommended…

  42. Bavarian Missile says:

Here is the link to check out the photo

    http://www.carpoint.com.au/car-review/2819085.aspx

  43. Bavarian Missile says:

Hey Andrew just sent you the link via email, have posted it up on this site too but I imagine it may take a while till you can see it. Unbelievable he lived !

  44. Bavarian Missile says:

Seems everything old is new again! HDT new owner going to do a Brock VE ! Anyone interested in more ? I will try again to put a link up next post!

  45. Me. says:

The link will dissapear in no time if you put it on!

  46. Andrew M says:

oh no for holden/pontiac that is something people will throw at them. yes but funny how ironic it was. we build exciting cars yet you will fall asleep at the wheel. i can sence a slogan change if that gets out.

  47. Cobra 302 says:

As much as i would hate to admit it, this is a nice ute. I dont no way Ford/FPV and Holden?HSV are trying to go for that “european look”. We are in AUSTRALIA. I would rather see the 2010/2011 Falcon look more like a XA/B/C falcon with a new age modern touch, thats when HSV and FPV should bring back there GTS-R Monaro and Phase V GT-HO. And I think all aussie muscle heads want that to and the only reason the car makers are going this way is because it is politicaly correct and 2 many old farts are in the business!!! Ford/FPV, for once in your life listern to a die hard Ford fan, give the loyal ford fans what they want.

  48. Andy Pandy says:

Ford is so far behind the times. I have the option to buy either cars. I go by the car not the badge, i am not a Ford or Holden man or either a young kid. But I have to say taking out the lastest ford Super P UTE for 3 hours., I wasnt impressed. Engine good, the rest cheap, Torno wobbles, cheap brackets, plastic is cheap looking, music centre cheap, steering wheel cheap,,i just found all was put together cheaply. So i cannot wait to see this New Holdon Ute as its look so far ahead of the Ford.Maybe i am turing to become a Holden man
