2019 Volvo S60 revealed

American-built sedan may not come to Australia

Volvo has revealed its first car to be built in America, the company's all-new S60 sedan.

The stylish four-door will be built at a new plant in South Carolina as a rival for the likes of the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4.

Despite the popularity of those junior luxury sedans, the S60's arrival in Australia has yet to be locked in as the local division concentrates on booming SUV segments.

Drive

Using Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture that also underpins the XC60 and XC90 soft roaders as well as S90 sedan and V60 wagon, the mid-sized S60 is the first Volvo to be offered without a diesel engine option. It will initially be available with a choice of two petrol poweplants in T5 and T6 specification, the former being a 183kW 2.0-litre turbo charged engine with front-wheel drive and the latter a turbo and supercharged version producing 228kW and exclusively offered with all-wheel drive.

There will also be two complex plug-in hybrids with turbo and superchargers in T6 Twin Engine and T8 Twin Engine configurations, producing 251kW and 298kW respectively, with the flagship T8 to be available with a Polestar Engineered package that boosts outputs to 309kW and 670Nm to lower its acceleration from 0-100km/h to 4.7 seconds. The kit will also include upgraded suspension, braking and body enhancements.

Drive

Like every Volvo model, all S60 variants will come equipped with the latest in advanced safety systems, including semi-autonomous driving functions, and up-to-date connectivity with 4G wifi and smartphone mirroring through a tablet-style colour touchscreen in the centre of the dash.

More details on the availability of the S60 locally will become clearer over the second half of the year. Stay tuned to Drive.com.au for any confirmation.
