Interesting review, but again only talks about the 1.4 litre petrol engine. I'm considering purchasing the 2.0 diesel, and probably don't have the time or leverage with the VW dealerships to take out both examples and drive them for a week or two in order to decide which one would be best over the long term.

The diesel is more expensive and costs less to run (diesel is generally more expensive than 98RON and both the city cycle and highway mileage is better) and from a purely economic sense, you wont make back the price difference until you've driven a lot more miles than I would have over the 3 year timeframe I'll be keeping the car. I do however want to "put my money where my mouth is", and spend the extra $$ to have the car with the smaller carbon footprint.

From a performance point of view, the diesel has much better torque, and hence in-gear acceleration, but the 1.4 beats it by about a 0.2 to 0.4 of a second to most of the speeds I'll be doing in the city that will take up about 95% of the driving I'll be doing

vis.

0-40km/h
TSI: 2.2 sec
TDI: 2.2 sec

0-60km/h
TSI: 3.5 sec
TDI: 3.8 sec

0-80km/h

I'm looking forward to when VW turns it into a 2.8 litre V8 with twin Supercharger and twin turbocharger, and then into a 5.6 litre W16 with 4 superchargers and 8 turbos

Stuff it all into the Golf, and then we can play :)

Thanks for the correction Gavin, for some odd reason the press release listed power output per litre, which is pretty useless.
