New Engines for VW Golf GT Sport and Passat
September 24, 2007 by George Skentzos
Volkswagen’s highly successful Golf GT TSI which was released earlier this year now has a permanent place amongst the ranks of VW.
Under the new guise of Golf GT Sport to emphasize its performance credentials, it will now be available in two sporty yet economical models – the TSI and new 2.0 TDI.
The TSI maintains its twin-charged 1.4L engine which produces 125 kW and torque figures more commonly found in larger 2.3-litre models of 240 Nm from 1750 to 4500 RPM with 20 percent lower fuel consumption. This is thanks to its unique combination of an exhaust turbocharger with a mechanically driven supercharger.
The new 2.0 TDI model again focuses on efficient performance, featuring a four-cylinder TDI engine with an output of 125 kW at 4200 rpm and maximum torque of 350 Nm from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm, covering 0 to 100 km/h in a surprising 8.2 seconds.
The Golf GT Sport features sports suspension, exclusive 17 inch alloy wheels “BBS ClassiXs”, 225 tyres, 16 inch brakes, distinctive bumper and radiator grille design, twin tailpipes, sports seats and a sports steering wheel which mimic the sporty styling of its older brother, the Golf GTI.
Additional styling features of the Golf GT Sport include a new grille surround in charcoal (formally body colour) and GT Sport badge.
The 125 kW 2.0 TDI engine also makes an appearance in the new Passat Range, where the 0 to 100km/h time is only slightly increased to 8.6 seconds in the sedan version despite the extra bulk.

Wasnt that long ago the bigger then everyone else AMERICANS laughed at TSI motor…..Hmmm. Better do a TAKE 2 on that one!!!!!
They are more busy designing souped up crap butch ugly rubbish on wheels – do not take this Ford Aust fans views; simply go to http://www.ford.com and you will hate the look. Real classic smooth as cars are rarer the elephants flying over in the USA!
Power output of 1.4L TSI is not 90kW as listed but 125kW
Thanks for the correction Gavin, for some odd reason the press release listed power output per litre, which is pretty useless.
Yes great car motor… not liked in the USA as hasnt got 8 cylinders, car not big enough and 1metre less wide then normal… UPGRADE IT TO STINKING EXTRA LARGE PLEASE WITH FRIES ON THE SIDE MAAM… LOL
I’m looking forward to when VW turns it into a 2.8 litre V8 with twin Supercharger and twin turbocharger, and then into a 5.6 litre W16 with 4 superchargers and 8 turbos
Stuff it all into the Golf, and then we can play :)
Uhhh, 16 inch brakes? You mean it has 406mm rotors? You might want to check that…
ok um why has it got a turbo and supachager, im new to this but dont they both need air to work and correct fuel to air mixtures wich i think would be diffrent but uu kow im just new
Interesting review, but again only talks about the 1.4 litre petrol engine. I’m considering purchasing the 2.0 diesel, and probably don’t have the time or leverage with the VW dealerships to take out both examples and drive them for a week or two in order to decide which one would be best over the long term.
The diesel is more expensive and costs less to run (diesel is generally more expensive than 98RON and both the city cycle and highway mileage is better) and from a purely economic sense, you wont make back the price difference until you’ve driven a lot more miles than I would have over the 3 year timeframe I’ll be keeping the car. I do however want to “put my money where my mouth is”, and spend the extra $$ to have the car with the smaller carbon footprint.
From a performance point of view, the diesel has much better torque, and hence in-gear acceleration, but the 1.4 beats it by about a 0.2 to 0.4 of a second to most of the speeds I’ll be doing in the city that will take up about 95% of the driving I’ll be doing
