15 May 2017: Nio EP9 sets Nurburgring record for road-legal vehicles

One year ago today saw China's electric supercar – the Nio EP9 – lap the Nurburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes 45.9 seconds, faster than the Lamborghini Huracan Performante by a little over six seconds.

Powered by four electric motors, each with its own single-speed transmission, the EP9 develops 1000kW. Nio claims the electric hypercar can sprint from 0-200km/h in just 7.1 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 313km/h.

15 May 2013: HSV gunning for M5, RS6, E63

It's been half a decade since the Gen-F HSV GTS launched, powered by a manic 6.2-litre supercharged V8 making 430kW and 740Nm.

The company made bold claims at launch, saying it expected the Aussie-built super sedan to steal sales from established German performance models such as the Audi RS6, BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63 – all of which retailed for more than twice the price.

"Obviously an E63 AMG, an M5 is where this spec vehicle [GTS] sits. You look at the power, torque, brake packages, the feature sets; it’s a very similar type of package," said Tim Jackson, HSV's marketing and communications general manager.

14 May 2010: Volkswagen Golf GTI Adidas revealed

The limited-edition Volkswagen Golf GTI Adidas was revealed eight years ago this week, as part of the annual GTI meet at Lake Worthersee.

Key changes from the standard version included 'Adidas' badging, special 10-spoke alloy wheels, along with interior trims and highlights featuring the sports apparel brand's iconic three-striped motif.

It eventually made it to Australia in 2011, as a five-door DSG-only model, priced from $45,990 plus on-road costs.

14 May 2008: FPV F6 launched

Continuing the theme of now-defunct Aussie performance cars, it's now been a whole decade since Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) released the FG Falcon-based F6 sedan.

Power came from a 4.0-litre turbocharged inline six, developing 310kW of power and 565Nm of torque – the latter available from 1950 to 5200rpm.

While the company didn't quote firm performance figures, the F6 was capable of matching the capabilities of European sports sedans of the time – much like the HSV GTS – while retailing for just $65,990 before on-road costs. Such a shame they are no more.
