BMW X6 – A closer look

September 18, 2007 by Alborz Fallah

When our photographer brought us the first pictures of the new BMW X6 from Frankfurt, we began to wonder, who exactly will buy the X6? It’s not a traditional SUV and it’s not exactly a Crossover either. It’s more like a mix between the BMW 5 series and the X5.

The X6 concept at Frankfurt is said to be nearly identical to the production version, so what you see here is what you’re going to see on the road in a few years time.

BMW will offer the X6 with a choice of a Two Mode hybrid powertrain which the German company says will cut the fuel bill by at least 20 percent.

So who exactly will buy this environmentally friendly vehicle? Based on the current generation X5, the X6 has all the same capabilities as the X5, but with more style. Perhaps its a similar story between the M5 and the M6.

BMW calls it a Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) because of the steeply sloped roof that give the car a more dynamic and sporty look. BMW is hoping the X6 will appeal to those currently not too fond of driving around in an SUV, but looking to exchange their sedan for something a little more practical while retaining the style.

Confirmed to be the same size as the X5, the only main difference apart from the looks will be the X6’s smaller cargo space, but just how many current X5 owners use all their cargo space anyway?

The X6 can easily get away with not being regarded as another SUV in traffic, perhaps that’s the car’s biggest selling point, but you tell us, who will buy the X6? Would you?

As a current X3 owners, I think the X6 should be very succesful if brought to australia.

I will definitely be in line for one if it comes here, especially the Hybid variant.

  3. CHRIS says:

As the owner of a new X3, when i change this car over if the X6 is available it will be high on my list, in fact it would probably be between this and a v8 5 series

  4. Style says:

I like the styling of the X6, which is what it’s all about, compared with the new X5. If BMW Australia keeps its price resonably competitive, it will sell well. By that, I mean if the price premium over the X5 is not much more, compared with the bigger premium between the 5 series and the 6 series.

  5. David says:

Will they take my Jeep Grand Cherokee as a trade in? I’m going to start saving for an X6 now.

  6. Bavarian Missile says:

Hey David…….Im not for these SUVs myself but that is a good looking vehicle! Even thought I am a BMW LOVER!
