Update: 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI announced

Following the unveiling of the new wide body 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX, Subaru has given us a sneak peek of the new flagship STI version.

Captioned simply with the phrase “The wing is back!”, the accompanying teaser shot shows a sheet draped over the STI with an obvious silhouette of the trademark rally-style wing at the rear.

Unfortunately it seems reports of a coupe version have now been all but quashed, with the sedan fitting into the shape of the covered STI exactly.

The official unveiling of the new generation Subaru Impreza WRX STI will take place the New York International Auto Show on April 1, 2010.

It looks better with the sheet on….

    • sammo

      like most Subarus these days

  • Kang

I hope this to look a lot better than current hatchback version

  • Supercujo

Comment still awaiting moderation (c’mon guys), but the hatch shape fits under the covers too..

    • Jon Leong

Agree… I think it will be a Hatch

      • George Skentzos

Doesn’t make sense that Subaru would transform the WRX sedan with a wide body kit then not release a sedan version of the STI. My money is definitely on sedan.

It needs a lot more than a wing glued on the back.

    • greenroom

I don’t think glue is allowed, to keep it agricultural, they’ll use nails.

  • greenroom

Even with the sheet off, it’ll still look like sheet.

Subaru is slowly re-engineering the “Mojo” back into the Rex. IMO they made the MY08 completely souless and have been updating the car significantly since!

  • Wopenka

a Sedan version of the sti that will look great! I bet there’s going to be a 2 door version aswell.

    • mark

well if there is you will see plenty of them at the dealers waiting for owners. lmao

      • Jeff

You do realize that the coupe (when still available pre-2002 as the 2.5RS) was the most popular model, right?

  • nicks

at the end of the day the car has lost its credibility due to subaru not entering the still looks cheap and the interior quality is years behind german makes.even the evo looks more aggresive internally and externally

    • philthy

Subaru is out of the wrc because the 2011 rules require a transverse inline 4.. which goes against all the marketing for the impreza.

  • Dale

I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that it’s a GT style wing. The falloff of the sheet makes it appear to be the traditional style wing, but looks can be deceiving and maybe that’s what they’re trying to get us to fall for…only to surprise us at launch.

Of course come April 1st, I may be eating my words.

  • bulldogs

    Evo X still better

  • Blindman

It must be hard to see with the sheet draped over the windows – or is that an option that you can choose not to have.

  • Luke

Personally, I think it should look great.

But unveiled on April 1st, maybe its just a Fools Day joke?

  • Raf

I expect a fake reveal on April 1 (Outback WRX STI, anyone?) and then the real one the next day.

jesus christ if Subaru has any humanity left in them they will not just slap a wing on the current WRX sedan and call it an STI

  • Vince

HAHA Too Late. That’s what they did. It’s a sedan with a wing :)

    • zahmad

Yup, now they are degrading the STI value, by differentiating the WRX from the low-base models!
