The Rolls-Royce Ghost has won this year’s prestigious “red dot: best of the best” design award.
The German-based award, one of the most important in the world for product design, recognises both groundbreaking design and unusually high quality in all manner of fields including machinery, cars, furniture and even home appliances. The red dot award has been one of the world’s most coveted design prizes since 1955, and includes such former winners as Apple, Bose, BMW and Siemens.
Taking home this year’s award, Ghost is the second model from Rolls-Royce to win the highly-respected award in as many years, with its Phantom Drophead Coupé taking first place in 2008.
“This is a tremendous accolade for the entire Rolls-Royce design team,” said Ian Cameron, Chief Designer of the Rolls-Royce Ghost.
“As a designer, the challenge lies in translating ideas into a medium which others can see, touch and feel,
“We are very proud of what we have achieved with the Ghost and are delighted to have been recognised with this very special award.”
The Ghost’s unmistakable appearance is said to be a modern reinterpretation of the Rolls-Royce brand’s classic values. Its large, uninterrupted surfaces and flowing lines provide definition and strength of form, emphasising the solid, luxurious character of the vehicle.
A powerful shoulder line and flanks that draw inward sharply from the rear wing add definition to the tail lamps. While at the front, an elongated bonnet, short front overhang and steeply raked windscreen lend an assertive presence that is almost without rival.
Modern design touches including self-righting wheel centres, chromed exhausts and Xenon headlamps meet with traditional trademarks, such as the famous Rolls-Royce grille. The latest evolution of this revered automotive feature sees its sides curved inward at the top, while its vertical intake vanes are set deeper into the aperture for a more modern appearance.
“We wanted this to be less reminiscent of the traditional Parthenon style and more like a jet intake,” said Mr Cameron.
