Evans Electric set to launch AWD EV with 70kW in-wheel motors

A report published in Electric Vehicle News today says Sydney-based company, Evans Electric, is set to launch a high performance in-wheel electric vehicle motor system within the next two months.

The disc type Axial Flux AC Induction wheel motors have been under development for the past three years and will feature in a demonstration vehicle Evans Electric says will be launched "in the next month or two".

"The Evans Electric in-wheel electric motor is a unique disc-type motor based on linear induction motor principles," explains Evans Electric website.

"The wheel motor consists of a unique 180-degree arched double-sided linear induction motor stator and ladder bar disc rotor.

"This electric motor design has many advantages in an electric vehicle wheel motor application."

The vehicle, an as yet unnamed small, four-door sedan with a "long history of World Rally Championship success", will feature an all-wheel drive arrangement with one 70kW electric motor in each of its 19-inch wheels.

Powered by a 400-volt high power density A123 lithium ion nanophosphate battery pack, Evans Electric claims the car has a potential 0-100km/h time of just three seconds.

Evans Electric says AC induction motors are relatively cheap to produce, and that because of its 'open disc rotor' design, expensive liquid cooling systems are not required.
