Since its launch in 1998, the New Beetle has remained relatively unchanged, but with demand for the retro two-door waning, Volkswagen has announced an all-new model is on its way.

Based on new platform, a variation of the next Jetta’s, the new New Beetle will offer more interior space, thanks to a longer wheel base and wider track.

The next Beetle will be produced on Puebla, Mexico, and will offer a number of powertrain options including a 156kW 2.0-litre or 120kW 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol and US only 127kW, five-cylinder engine.

VW is said to be placing more emphasis on the new model’s dynamic abilities, making it a better drive than the out-going example. Most of the iconic styling is expected to remain.

A concept version of the next New Beetle is expected to debut at this year’s Los Angeles Motor Show with a market launch due in early to mid 2011.

They’ve got their work cut out for them to try and match the appeal of the mini, theyve gotta shake the cutesy girly image the latest beetle has carved for them if they expect it to be taken seriously
