Range Rover SV Coupe confirmed for Geneva

999 cars to be built, scheduled for March 6 reveal

Land Rover will use the 2018 Geneva motor show to unveil the "world's first full-size luxury SUV coupe", in the form of the Range Rover SV Coupe.

With a proper two-door silhouette, the SV Coupe is designed to evoke (no, not Evoque) the original 1970 Range Rover. Just 999 examples will be built at the JLR SV Technical Centre in Warwickshire.

Just one image of the car has been revealed thus far, previewing its blue-and-white four-seat interior (above). The transmission tunnel is finished in beautiful wood, while the distinction between the front and rear seats has been made clear with some clever colouring on the seats.

Certain elements of the 'regular' Range Rover interior carry over, including the dual-screen infotainment system and rotary gear selector.

"The Range Rover SV Coupé is a highly compelling design with peerless refinement and uncompromised sophistication from its breathtaking exterior proportions to its sumptuous, beautifully appointed, interior," said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover's chief design officer.

"This is a vehicle that will resonate on an emotional level."

McGovern has previously hinted at the coupe's existence, suggesting journalists 'write that down' when he referenced a two-door Range Rover variant during a Los Angeles motor show press conference.

Beyond the interior, Range Rover hasn't provided any hints as to what the car will look like, but spy pictures have suggested the SV Coupe will have a shorter body, lower (and more aggressively raked) roofline and, obviously, fewer doors than the regular Rangie.

The SV Coupe is part of the "natural progression" of Range Rover toward a "more tailored, more bespoke, refined and luxurious" line-up.

“All I can say is, that as a business, over the last few years under Tata, we’ve had a look at all the products we could do… I can’t say when, I can’t say what, but there are opportunities,” McGovern said at last year's Los Angeles motor show.

“We have proved with Range Rover that there are opportunities to offer derivatives of these vehicles, and to offer them in a way to bring something new to the market.”

The SV Coupe will be unveiled on March 6. Stay tuned for all the latest.
