The Toyota HiLux range will be bolstered by a trio of new variants in the second quarter of 2018, in the form of the Rogue, Rugged and Rugged X.

Pitched as three different flagship models, each new variant has a different flavour, though all sport features that increase the Japanese ute’s off-road protection, recovery and functionality. It’s also the first time Australian models have received the revised front end that has been revealed for several overseas markets.

First up is the flagship HiLux Rugged X (above), which is “primed for adventure” thanks to its alloy bash plate, winch-compatible hoopless steel bull bar, black grille with honeycomb design and gloss-black surround, snorkel, LED driving lights, front and rear recovery points, rock rails, load-carrying sports bar, along with “other heavy-duty components”.

Second is the HiLux Rogue, offering a more premium look with its hexagonal upper grille, revised front bumper design and heavily-revised fog-lights. It’s quite similar to the SR5 Cruiser variant recently announced for New Zealand.

Finally, there’s the HiLux Rugged, which gets an off-road look like the Rugged X without all the heavy-duty equipment. Features include unique front-end design with a premium steel bull bar.

Pricing for these new models are yet to be announced, though it’s expected the trio will all ask for more than the SR5’s current starting rice of $54,440 before on-road costs.

HiLux buyers increasingly demand additional features – in fact, they spend more on accessories than any other vehicle in our range,” said Sean Hanley, vice president for sales and marketing at Toyota Australia.

“These new vehicles will enable them to make a statement with advanced toughness, added capability, practical comfort, first-class safety and the in-built strength that makes HiLux the indisputable No. 1.”

“HiLux Rugged X is a no-compromise vehicle for those seeking adventure with a robust and capable vehicle that makes the ultimate statement: work hard, play harder. HiLux Rogue is for people who want refinement and capability, enabling them to go for weekend adventures and do it in style. HiLux Rugged is about toughness and off-road performance – an ideal vehicle for getting off the beaten track,” he added.

Final pricing and specifications will be announced closer to launch.
