Top 5 news stories of 2017

2017 is almost over. It's time for Christmas parties, sunshine and rose-tinted reflection on the year gone by. But here at CarAdvice, we aren't taking our foot off the pedal just yet – instead, we're taking the chance to look back at some of the most popular news stories published this year.

For this instalment, we're covering off the five most visited CarAdvice news stories of the year.

The results may not surprise, but they're certainly testament to Australia's reputation for preferring big sedans, a good dose of power, some handy cargo space, and a stylish SUV. (Hey, you don't necessarily have to back that reputation...)

In terms of reader engagement, the Kia Stinger has been as prolific as Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber on the pop music charts.

We figured the twin-turbo V6 variant would be quick - but sub-5.0 seconds quick? That's true performance car territory.

In March, the Korean manufacturer confirmed the Stinger GT's 0-100km/h time, concurrently making the liftback the quickest vehicle Kia has ever produced.

From one liftback to another, the next-gen Holden Commodore is another hot topic, considering it will now be sourced from Europe and not offer a V8 performance hero.

Instead, we have this, the Commodore VXR, which features a naturally aspirated V6 under the bonnet and all-wheel drive.

Has it divided opinion? Absolutely. But we'll reserve our full judgement until we drive it next year.

With local manufacturing coming to an end, it was unknown what exactly would happen to Holden Special Vehicles (HSV).

In July, trademark renderings for gave us an early preview of the tuning company's plans for the Colorado ute, which was recently revealed as the SportsCat.

Another Stinger story in our top 5 countdown, published in January.

During the Detroit motor show, Kia Australia's chief operating officer, Damien Meredith, told CarAdvice the local arm believed the twin-turbo V6 Stinger would appeal to buyers that would have normally looked at a V8 Commodore or Falcon before local manufacturing ended.

While it may not pack a V8 engine of its own, the Stinger V6 is no slouch. Kia claims a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 4.9 seconds, and we verified that by pulling of a 4.8-second run in our recent twin test.

Despite all the hype around the Kia Stinger and the end of Australian vehicle manufacturing, the top story of 2017 came in March when the Range Rover Velar was officially revealed.

Slotting between the smaller Evoque and the larger Sport, the Velar is touted as the "avant-garde Range Rover", and borrows its name from early prototypes of the original luxury off-roader.

Its styling continues to divide opinion, but you can't deny that it stands out from the wider SUV crowd. We also love the dual-touchscreen infotainment system on the inside - a real trailblazer in that regard.
