2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class interior revealed

Hardcore off-roader to have a softer interior

Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the cabin of the 2018 G-Class in full.

As we learned from leaked images last month, the totally-redesigned cabin has been dragged, kicking and screaming, in line with the wider Mercedes-Benz range. There's stylish circular air vents, a dual-screen infotainment system and digital instrument binnacle, along with new steering wheel controls from the S-Class.

The passenger is still faced with a chunky grab handle – perfect for staying steady over rough terrain – and the dashboard is still blocky and upright, but the overall design is significantly nicer than that of the outgoing car.

Reports out of Europe suggest a range of materials, including open-pore wood and carbon-fibre, will be offered as options, while luxurious touches like heated seats and a 16-speaker audio system will also be available.

Don't be fooled into thinking the new G-Wagen has gone soft, though. There are still switches for the differential locks in the middle of the centre console, for example, while Mercedes has explicitly said the new car will maintain its rugged appeal.

David McCarthy, local communications head for Mercedes-Benz, told CarAdvice the plusher cabin could "attract some new buyers” but, despite the renewed luxury focus, the car will still fill a “pretty unusual niche”.

“It will be a better drive, but it hasn’t lost any off-road ability,” McCarthy added. “I believe it has more. I believe on-road it will be a better vehicle.”

Stay tuned for more G-Class updates in the coming months.
