Peugeot Sea Drive unveiled in Paris

Peugeot has a long, fascinating history when it comes to manufacturing. Along with cars of varying quality, the French company has produced bikes, salt-and-pepper grinders, umbrellas and chisels, among other bits-and-pieces.

It should come as no surprise, then, to hear about a new non-automotive side-project from the brand.

Developed in tandem with Beneteau, the Sea Drive Concept explores how lessons learned while developing the i-Cockpit setup from Peugeot cars can improve the control stations in ships.

Much like the i-Cockpit, the Sea Drive is centred around a compact steering wheel, designed to make the boat feel more agile on the move. Instead of the usual array of gauges and dials, captains can access most information – and tweak most major functions – through a 17-inch touchscreen.

A folding panel, designed to be in direct line-of-sight like a head-up display, shows the captain where they're headed, and there are toggle switches flanking the steering wheel. The entire system relies on Beneteau Ship Control software to pull things together. Along with the displays in front of the captain, on-board telemetry information can be wirelessly streamed to crew tablets.

Everything from the on-board lighting and air-conditioning, to information about navigation and fuel levels can be remotely monitored.

Peugeot says the materials and trim used in the Sea Drive Concept mirror those of production cars. The trim is equivalent to GT-Line specification in production cars, which means there's lots of chrome, copper and satin highlights, along with lashings of nappa leather.

"We are delighted to have had the opportunity to apply the carefully crafted ergonomics and design of i-Cockpit® to a different industry sector and demonstrate its adaptability as a design, particularly as it allowed us to form a partnership with a brand as prestigious as Beneteau," Jean-Philippe Imparato, Peugeot CEO, said.

The Sea Drive Concept will be on show at the 2017 Paris Boat Show, which runs until December 10.
