2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class spied again

The all-new 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been spied again, with images of its interior doing the rounds online.

Set to launch next year, the brand-new G-Class will be wider and more spacious than its ageing predecessor, with a greater focus on road driving.

As is the case with long-running off-road nameplates like the Jeep Wrangler, changes to the G-Class are likely to be subtle on the outside. The new car has a very similar profile to the current model, with the same blocky window line and upright nose.

The covered three-pointed star would suggest radar-based cruise control and active safety features are on the way, as part of a much-needed injection of tech.

But the biggest changes come behind the wheel, where the new G-Class has (finally) been brought into line with the rest of the Mercedes-Benz range. That means rounded chrome air vents, a dual-screen driver display and the steering wheel from the S-Class all feature, along with (what look like) nicer materials all around.

Don't think the new car will be a conventional soft-roader, though. It still has buttons on the dashboard for individual diff locks, and low-range is accessed through a button next to the Comand controller on the centre console.

David McCarthy, local communications head for Mercedes-Benz, told CarAdvice the new cabin "might attract some new buyers" but, despite the more luxurious focus, the car will still fill a "pretty unusual niche".

"It will be a better drive, but it hasn’t lost any off-road ability," McCarthy added. "I believe it has more. I believe on-road it will be a better vehicle."

In Australia, the new AMG G63 will be the first model to arrive, followed by the more sedate (and boring, naturally) G300. The car should be touching down on local shores in June or July.
