Opel Astra SportsTourer spy photos

By Matt Brogan |

Here they are, the very first spy photos of the Opel/Vauxhall Astra SportsTourer.

Our spy photographers have been waiting for signs of it for the whole northern winter, and suddenly it pops out wearing only light camouflage. And it’s looking really good too.

The tailgate aperture is not as large as that of the Insignia ST, and the taillamps are of a different design to suit – similar to those found on the Astra hatch.

The interior design and engine options will also be the same as the Astra hatch, and just like the five-door, a hotter Astra GSi version will also follow.

Im in Europe at the moment and went and looked at this new Astra today, and its a nice car and all but the interior just feels cluttered and a bit cramped. I would definatly go for a Golf instead

  • Gavjon

And we are supposedly interested in this wagon because? Holden have canned the Astra line up. Pity. I guess we will have to wait for the Korean’s to bring out a version before Holden will consider it??? I often wonder how Ford imports the small to medium line up it does from Europe, but Holden can’t afford to? They get Korean??? Strange world you live in Holden………………….

    • JEKYL & HYDE

      cheer up gav,

holden will have a coupe and wagon version of the cruze.just a matter of time.and yes,,g.m. was selling opel last year,or had you forgotten.cruze kills a.h. astra in every way except acceleration(through more weight),and price is a no-contest.ford can import all in likes from europe, what does it sell compared to korean, thai built cars?(not much)…

      • Gavjon

No Jekel, I had not forgotten the sell off, but I would much rather a Feista, Focus or Mondeo over a Barina, Cruze or Epica. Seriously, who wouldn’t? I have the Mondeo, a Titanium I picked up a month ago, and it is one of the top cars I have owned. I also have another European Brand car, and will contiune to have them ANY day over the cheap imports out of Korea. I may pay more, but I like the quality.

Drove my first Cruze a few days ago…was the top model, very well equipped and nice to sit in. Interior was beautiful and the dashboard exceptional to look at, especially at night. Drove nicely too, though I thought the (petrol) engine a little noisy just off idle. Cruze feels far nicer to sit in than Focus, but not as nice as a Golf.

          • Shak

Agreed. I dont really see anything that wrong with Holden’s current Korean crop. When they get rid of the Epica, and decide to import something in its place their line up will be complete.

          • Andrew M

Yep ill agree the interior in the Focus is a little dated and bland to sit in, but the Focus has better dynamics and a punchier engine. It also has a very good diesel option.

The Mazda still beats them both as its punchy engine, great box and great dynamics is backed up by a quality interior.
Thats where my money ended up, and I think its worth the extra.

        • Stoney!

Driven both cruze’s and focus as company cars as well as mazda 3 and corolla and a couple of i30′s, interior in focus is appalling in comparison to the rest, even the i30 and stereo certainly suffered because of this (i30 stereo average, 3 and corolla stereo is crap . The focus interior is ugly and the seats suck, the cruze is better in almost every way, and we have diesels so I don’t have to worry about the wheezy petrol engine.

So in closing, I’d buy a Cruze over a corolla i30 and it would be tight between it and the mazda3….But I’d sooner have my golf over any of them.

          Stoney!

    • mmmmm

The focus comes from south africa not europe (except the xr) and its a good but boring car. The fiesta is about to switch countries to thailand. Clearly with the booming sales of the Cruze australian buyers and more interested in good value than any country of origin snobbery

      • Andrew M

        Sad, but true.

Slave labour wins out at the end of the day.

Its like the battle to sell free range eggs. Sure there are a few that care about the hens, but most just want cheap eggs

        • Shak

That is capitalism. We all want the best at the lowest prices. And thus companies are forced to exploit cheap labour.

  • Aim

No, no, thats ok, because we get the Cruze and its awesome compared to this… it has better aesthetics, better built quality, it was not at all designed by a committee…

However i must say the cruze will be more reliable than the astra, but im sure they would have learned from the previous astra mistakes and fixed them….

What we could have had, and what we have……

    • toxic_horse

We could have had a lot of things, holden could have start importing Corvettes. Holden could be still importing isuzu gemini’s. The fact is, Holden now have a popular range of cars that they are selling well.
      Times have changed, move on.

    • Baddass

If either was designed by a comittee, it would be the Cruze. There was input from all major GM markets, and is suitably tuned. Hopefully for the Aussie version the steering is improved (a common fault amongst Korean cars), styling slightly adjusted and the name changed. Then it would be nearer to the top of it’s class.

    • Ezz

I think good on holden for the sales of their Sth Korean stable of cars, but it does puzzle me. I just heard that Holden have had to cease deliveries of the Cruze due to a faulty fuel line which may cause leaks.

I’d hold off on declaring superior quality of these vehicles, just for the moment.

  • fishman

This looks great – and for all the talk right now you can still only get the Cruze in sedan. Lack of a hatch is a massive oversight and will be costing sales very week until they rectify it…

    • Shak

Doesnt seem to be doing that much harm. A healthy 1800-2000 sales per month is well above Holden’s expectations, and when the hatch goes local, it will just be more successful.

      • Andrew M

Agree, with 1800-2000 units, they must be happy, its quite a healty top up.

I actually dont think they missing hatch will be losing them many sales. I would think the hatch will only steal sales from the sedan.

  • filippo

Bring it to oz with the Corsa and Insignia, but badged as Opels. I almost bought an Astra 2 years ago but couldn’t stomach the fact that it shared its badge with the bogan-chick favourite the Barina.

    • Ad

I agree, we should have the Opel brand here. One of the better GM brands shame they didn’t sell.
