2018 BMW i3 and i3s pricing and specs
Australian pricing and specifications for the 2018 BMW i3 and new i3s have been announced today, following the updated EV's August unveiling.
The range kicks off with the pure-electric i3 94Ah, priced from $68,700 (+600) excluding on-road costs. Power comes from an electric motor with 125kW and 250Nm, good for a 7.3 second sprint from 0-100km/h. Range from the 33kWh battery is pegged at 300km on the NEDC, or around 200km in the real world.
Standard equipment includes the Driving Assistance Plus package with speed-limit information, forward-collision warnings and adaptive cruise control. Parking sensors (front and rear) and a reversing camera are also included.
The driver and passenger sit on manually-adjusted seats trimmed in cloth and leather combination, faced with a 10.25-inch iDrive touchscreen atop the centre console. Other kit includes DAB radio, smartphone integration, satellite navigation along with a four-speaker audio system.
Jumping to the i3 94Ah Range Extender (REX) bumps the price to $74,700 (+$600) before ORCs. Although it makes the same amount of power, the addition of a 9.0-litre fuel tank and two-cylinder petrol engine makes for an 8.1 second run to 100km/h.
Official fuel consumption is 0.6l/100km, with an 'everyday range' of 330km.
The i3s is new to the range, and brings a more powerful 135kW/270Nm motor to the party for a 6.9 second sprint time from rest to triple figures. Pricing starts at $69,900 excluding on-roads.
Compared to the 'regular' i3, the more expensive 's' rides 10mm lower on its sports suspension, and has a sportier steering tune. It also gets retuned software for the traction control, and a dedicated drive mode joins Normal and EcoPro on the 'driving experience control.'
On the outside, the 's' is differentiated from its more mundane brethren by its aggressive bumpers, lower ride height and 20-inch wheels.
Adding a range extender to the i3s pushes the price to $75,900 excluding ORCs. The two-cylinder engine and small fuel tank make for a 7.7 second run to 100km/h, with claimed fuel consumption of 0.7l/100km and a 330km 'everyday range.'
Options include metallic paint ($1090) and a Comfort Package ($2000) with keyless go, seat heating and a 12-speaker sound system, along with full natural-leather seats ($1538). You'll also pay for a tyre pressure monitor ($285) and keyless entry an extra $2246. Apple CarPlay is a $479 option – bear in mind, though, it works wirelessly.
Windows with 'sun protection glazing' ($508) and seat heating ($562) round out the options list.
The i3 will be in dealerships from January 2018.
