Holden sales up 24 per cent in February

By Matt Brogan |

As this month’s FCAI figures are released, Holden has recorded a 24 per cent jump in sales for the month of February compared tot the same month last year.

The figures show a totl of 11,213 Holdens were sold during February with the most popular models including the Holden Commodore (3914 units), Holden Captiva (1315 units), Holden Cruze (2075), Holden Barina (1292 units) and Holden Colorado (1241 units).

“We started the year with good sales in January so we’re happy to see the momentum continuing through into February,” said Mr John Elsworth, Holden’s Executive Directon of Sales and Marketing.

“Holden’s market share sits at 13.8 per cent year to date and we’re rapt Australians are placing our cars on top of their shopping lists. Our plan remains pretty simple – keep building fantastic cars and offering outstanding value.”

When will they give us a decent mid sized car. I recently saw the Insignia in Europe and it looks great.

    • deco

I’d love them to sellit, but if there isn’t a business case meh.

GM-Dat is developing a world medium sized car off the same platform as the Insignia.

It will surely be just as good as the competition.

      • Shak

Exactly the thing that scared Holden last time is that people didnt want to pay the premium for an Opel ,and they are still tuck with that fear. They havent learnt from their mistake(Epica). All their other Korean offerings are doing very well and that seems to be the major reason they have turned from European sourcing. And besides, it really doesnt matter where the car comes from ,as long as it looks good and is cheap the people will buy it. Look at Cruze and Captiva sales.

        • ABMPSV

You saying “it does not matter where the car somes from” that is incorrect. All the German made cars which come from South Africa got major quality problems from VW Golf to BMW 3 series to Mercedes C class but all other BMW, Mercedes which comes from Germany quality is Good. In Germany/Europe you got tradition making cars in Korea they just started. I hope your next car is made in Uganda.

          • Shak

I was talking about Holden/Daewoo complaints. Dont you read the comment first before criticizing.

          • ChineseDriver

Have you ever owned a germany made car at all?

They are not that ‘germany quality’ as you imagined I’m afraid.

  • ABMPSV

Holden problem is that they do not have any other car that sells well only Commodore. Toyota got Corolla, Yaris, Hilux, Camry. Yes the Insignia is very nice car just as the new Opel Astra.

    • deco

      Captiva = No.1 SUV seller.

Cruze has over 2k sales without a hatch.

Barina is like 2nd or thirdin the segment.

      Seems alright to me.

Plus say 700-900 COmmodore Utes as well.

    • noj

It really does show you how many dumb people we have in this country. I`m in no way a Ford fan but their model line up is far superior than what Holden has to offer.

      • Shak

        In what ways?

        • jack

Better handling, better motor, better transmission, more comfortable, better open road tourer. Looks are subjective but they win there too; interior is a no brainer in favour of the Aussie Ford.

Cream on the cake is that since 1971 they have designed and built the whole thing here in Australia, you cannot even come close saying the same thing about the Commodore. Last Aussie Holden was 1984.

          QED

          • deco

Errr, the Falcon is newer, of course it will be better then the Commodore. They leap frog each other.

        • jack

Oh yeah, more solid suspension, better real world fuel economy. Our experience with both over many years allows me to say better build quality, too.

          QED once more

        • noj

          In every possible way.

      • Millatime

it is a national embarrassment that Commodore has been the country’s best selling car for 14 years… How stupid are we??? A nation of simpletons we must be…

  • Darren

Holden is very lucky to have the Australian population supporting it even though the company keeps selling inferior cars. Looking at the entire Holden’s range, I can’t find a decent car, either fuel thirsty or crap.

    • ABMPSV

100% Agree. I do not know what to choose from Holden range. Too big, bad quality or use too much fuel. Ford maybe the Focus or the new Fiesta.

      • deco

        The cruze smites the focus.

    • Captain Nemo

      @ Darren

I think your confusing your Toyoyas with your Holdens there bud.
Come on name one decent Toyota Dazza.

  • ABMPSV

    In bad quality. Yes!

  • Frenchie

If Holdens are such bad quality and inferior, why are they at the top of their respected classes (individual models I mean). You may say it because they’re cheap (to buy). But if you look they are about the same as their opposition.

Also as far as gas guzzling, thats old school disinformation. I get 13l/100km from my 3.6 (non-sidi) SV6 wagon carrying 5 around the city! It all depends on how you drive it.

    • noj

      Fleet sales.

      • Shak

Just goes to show the fleets would rather Holden sourced products.

        • Frenchie

Same could be said for Ford and Toyota. I see more fleet sales go to these two. The only fleet market that Holden has that is large is police cars. Even then Queensland uses Toyotas, and Victoria, NSW use have Ford/Holdens (as their main fleet).

  • Byron

Go Holden. Had a great month & most models has increased sales over last year/ Can’t wait for this year – Barina Spark, ’11 Barina, Captiva Facelift, VF Commdore feat. Touchscreen – Yeow! So much for it not being up to date & eveything. For those who wanted to know, Holden Ute sold 1,066, Statesman 36 & Caprice 121.
Anyone got figures for Epica & Combo for February 2010. Go HOLDEN! :D

    • http://bent Millatime

“Anyone got figures for Epica & Combo for February 2010?”

      Epica 1
      Combo ?

      • Byron

Are you being serious about Epica selling 1 car or are you joking?

        • nick

          Combo sells a few.
Better than those crappy French competitors.

    • David

Touchscreen? In the old days we called ‘em “buttons” (put your finger on it and stuff happens).

  • http://Audi Robj

I wish Holden had a great midsize car…like Torana 2004. I had to buy a Liberty. I also have a Frontera SE ready to update and now only Captiva is the choice from them. A softroader…no real 4WD from holden after Jackaroo finished.

  • Lynchy

I have to agree with Jack on this one, the equivalent Fords across the range certainly seem to win the majority of comparisons, at the present time I’d say the head to head status would be:

    Falcon over Commodore
    Focus over Cruz
    Fiesta over Barina
    Territory over Captiva
    Commy ute over Falcon ute
    Colorado Tied with Ranger

This is just what most dare I say reputable motoring magazines and website say, but unless you’ve owned them all for several years it’s hard to give a definative.

Frenchie and Shak, I think you’ll find Toyota leads the fleet sales now with Holden second. Ford do bugger all, they’ve moved away from it because whilst it looks good for sales it’s not overly profitable. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter how many cars a company sells, it’s how much profit they make once everythings paid for.

    • toxic_horse

      “Commy ute over Falcon ute”

I don’t know how you could say that.

      • Shak

The fact that the falcon ute is a live rear axle compared to the IRS under the commy is enough, dont ya reckon

        • toxic_horse

Which means the falcon can actually be used to carry things.

          • Lynchy

Toxic Horse, like I said this seems to be the general opinion in the media world, as a pure tradesman ute the Falcon wins hands down but the trend of that has slowly changed over the last few years, more and more people are buying utes just as light carrying recreational vehicles, SS and XR sales are continueing to grow whilst the commercials have slid. I think the commercials like Hilux, Triton, Navara, Ranger and Colorado are the tradies choice now days.

I think the FG sedans are better across the board but when it comes to the ute I don’t think the pumped rear end looks very coherent in FG, coupled with the solid rear end I think the Comy is on top, looks and driving dynamics give it an edge.

          • nick

While I am a Ford fan I would have to say that the Commodore ute is better. The Falcon is better in the base tradie spec but the XR’s are beaten by the SV6 and SS. Even thought the XR’s have leaf springs the SS has a greater load capacity. Also I can’t stand the panel gap in the Falcon.

        • Jack

Ford Utes are 3 seat column shift kings Shak. I’d love to see one in a Holden, FFS it is wide enough..

          Flexibility rules.

    • Jack

      Thanks Lynchy.

My view is borne of owning and driving both marques (as new vehicles) since about 1992… And I have a huge soft spot for Holdens of the ‘red’ motor era, they taught mechanics and kept me free! So I am interested in both. Currently Ford Australia have a great lineup, but all the customers are over the road at Toyota! Some of them are dropping 100K+ on LandCruisers too!

I will hazard to say that it is not ‘who won Bathurst’ that had the hero car, then the sales dominance, it is ‘who conquers the outback’ with dependability, reliability and country-wide service who has the hero car and wins. LandCruiser.

So if Ford and Holden are reading, outdo the Cruiser in the bush, then wait 30 years…

  • filippo

Let’s face it, Holden could have rebadged the Daewoo Leganza and released it as the latest VE Commodore, and they probably still would have been the best seller in its class (and saved themselves half a billion dollars in the process).
