Honda Sports EV Concept revealed

New concept pays tribute to Japanese giant’s sporting past while looking toward the future

Honda has unveiled its Sports EV Concept car in full on the opening day of the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.

Speaking to media during Honda’s opening presentation, Honda chief executive Takahiro Hachigo said the Sports EV was just one of many electric vehicles that will pave the way for Honda’s plan to electrify two-thirds of global vehicle sales by 2030.

The Sports EV Concept is based on the same dedicated electric vehicle platform as the Urban EV Concept revealed in Frankfurt last month and slated to hit the European market by 2019. The four-seat Urban EV also joins the Honda NeuV Concept as part of Honda’s future electrified urban mobility solutions.

The Sports EV Concept differs, however, with a focus on offering an EV sports car for enthusiasts. It features a lower centre of gravity compared to the Urban EV Concept and Hachigo says it is “developed to realize the joy of driving with a EV model,” and offers a, “sporty and exhilarating driving experience.”

Its compact body sits lower and wider than Honda’s other EVs and Hachigo claims it encapsulates the “beautility” of a sport car. Some of the design language appears to be inspired from one of Honda’s early production cars, the 1965 S600 fastback coupe, in much the same way the Urban EV Concept borrows from the 1967 N360 hatchback.

Artificial intelligence, which features in Honda’s other EV concepts, will also be part of the Sports EV Concept's futuristic technology. As detailed in the Urban EV concept, Honda’s AI can perform calculations and functions such as detecting emotions behind the driver’s decisions, only charge when electricity rates are low and, in some countries, sell back power to the grid when prices are high.
