Volkswagen Sharan Geneva 2010

By Alborz Fallah |

The Volkswagen Sharan is not a familiar name here in Australia even though it has been on sale for some time in other markets.

One of the interesting facts about the Volkswagen Sharan is the outgoing model has been on the market for 15 years!

The new version carries the same principles as the original, although it’s 22 cm longer allowing for more usable third row of seats.

In Europe and other markets there will be four engines available:

  • 2.0 litre diesel in 103 kW and 124 kW versions
  • 1.4 litre 110kW petrol (also used in European markets for the VW Passat and Skoda Superb)
  • 2.0 litre 147kW petrol.

The Volkswagen Sharan is similar in design to Volkswagen’s new family look, it comes featured with sliding rear doors. It will have a big fight on its hands to compete against the good looks of the Ford Galaxy.

Volkswagen Australia spokeswoman Jenny Wu told CarAdvice that at this stage the Volkswagen Sharan is not planned for sale in Australia.

Wow i thought the Old 9-5 was getting long in the tooth. 15 years is too long for anything made of metal.

    • The Real Car Fanatic

You forgot to mention the old Sharan was actually a design collaboration between VW and FORD, Hence why the Ford Galaxy, VW Sharan and SEAT Alhambra were identical.

Ford actually redesigned their Galaxy several years back to break away from the old shape. It’s about time VW followed suit, they should bring it here, the Sharan was a cracking vehicle in Diesel.

What a shame that ther seems to be no market space between a Kia Carnival and a Chrysler Voyager? I guess the real question for VW Australia is how few Taragos Toyota sells these days.
