Audi A8 Hybrid revealed at Geneva 2010

Audi has taken the covers off its A8 Hybrid at the Geneva Motor Show overnight.

The Audi A8 Hybrid combines a 2.0-litre TFSI engine with a small electric motor to develop a combined total of 180kW of power and 480Nm of torque. The combined fuel economy figure is 5.15L/100km while CO2 figures are just 144g/km.

The Audi A8 Hybrid's parallel hybrid system transmits power via an eight-speed tiptronic (automatic) transmission, enabling a 0-100km/h time of 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 236km/h. The system allows propulsion by either the petrol engine, the electric motor of a combination of the pair.

During coasting or braking, the electric motor acts as a generator that converts kinetic energy in to electricity to recharge the battery. The Audi A8 Hybrid can travel up to two kilometres on electric power alone at speeds up to 65km/h – enough for urban stop-and-go traffic.

Timing of the model's retail release has not yet been announced.
