Ford Ranger Raptor confirmed for 2018

Ford has confirmed that the Ranger Raptor performance ute will join the line-up, arriving in Asia-Pacific markets next year.

The Ford Ranger Raptor will join the larger F-150 Raptor in the Blue Oval's global off-road performance line-up, though is yet to disclose what will power the new hardcore ute.

"We are very excited to bring Asia Pacific’s toughest and smartest pickup truck to a whole new level,” said Trevor Worthington, vice president of product development for Ford Asia Pacific.

"Ford Ranger Raptor will offer Ranger fans a fantastic opportunity to own an authentic off-road performance version of their favorite truck for the first time.”

CarAdvice exclusively broke the story about the Ranger Raptor in 2015 and followed that up with the first spy photos of the prototype vehicle in the video. And, just a month ago, spy photographers in the US snapped a Ranger Raptor prototype undergoing testing, revealing the performance model's multi-link coil-sprung rear suspension setup with a Watt's linkage, rear disc brakes, and chunky BF Goodrich 285/70 R17 All-Terrain TA tyres - the latter potentially raising the Ranger's ground clearance from 225mm to 254mm.

We've heard conflicting stories regarding what's under the bonnet, though. Originally, it was claimed a prototype spotted in Australia sounded like it was running a petrol V6 - indicating that a version of the 336kW/690Nm 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 from the larger F-150 Raptor could feature.

However, the vehicle spied in the US was said to sound like a diesel, hinting that the Raptor could instead be powered by a more powerful version of the 147kW/470Nm 3.2-litre five-cylinder oiler that does service in the core range.

Regardless of which powerplant resides under the new Raptor's bonnet, Ford's new 10-speed automatic transmission - co-developed with General Motors (GM) - is expected to be the shifter of choice.

In its press release, Ford says: "[the] Ford Ranger Raptor sports a head-turning exterior look that exudes toughness as well as a level of capability and off-road performance never before seen in the mid-size pickup truck segment".

Stay tuned to CarAdvice for more Ford Ranger Raptor updates in the coming months. For now, you can watch the new performance truck tear up some dirt tracks here.
