2018 Seat Leon Cupra R revealed

228kW Spanish hot hatch limited to just 799 units

The 2018 Seat Leon Cupra R has been revealed, ahead of its public debut at next week's Frankfurt motor show.

Limited to 799 units, Spain's hottest hot hatch features an uprated version of the Leon Cupra's 2.0-litre turbo four, pumping out 228kW of power in six-speed manual form, and 220kW when equipped with the six-speed DSG self-shifter.

Before you ask, yes, that is the same power output as the related Volkswagen Golf R and Audi S3 - in cold-weather markets, at least. However, unlike its siblings, the Cupra R sends drive to the front wheels only, not all four.

Seat is yet to quote performance figures for its flagship performance hatch, though it has detailed that the Cupra R gets modified camber on the front axle, along with the adaptive suspension and dynamic chassis control systems. There's also Brembo brakes, and a new exhaust system.

The rest of the package is an array of cosmetic enhancements, including carbon-fibre details on the front and rear spoilers, side skirts and rear diffuser, copper wing mirrors and wheels, along with more aggressive wheel arches and front air intakes.

Inside, the Cupra R gets carbon-fibre and copper highlights, along with Alcantara trim on the steering wheel and gear stick - though there are no images as yet

Buyers will be able to opt for three colours, Midnight Black, Pyrenees Grey, and the exclusive Matte Grey (pictured, cost option).

Following its debut at the Frankfurt motor show next week, the Seat Leon Cupra R will go on sale in select markets at the "end of 2017".
