Mitsubishi RVR compact crossover launched

By Alborz Fallah |

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has launched its brand new compact crossover at dealerships throughout Japan.

The Mitsubishi RVR which will go on sale in Australia later this year will sit below the Outlander and be driven via the front-wheels only.

The compact crossover is designed to sit between the Lancer and the Outlander, it will be a model to look out as its designed to be extremely fuel efficient, so much so that it qualifies for the stringent Japanese domestic eco-car tax reduction.

It will retail in Japan from ¥1,785,000 to ¥2,449,650, Australian prices are expected to start from around $25,000.

The 4300mm long five-seater Mitsubishi RVR will be powered by a 1.8-liter, 16-valve DOHC MIVEC*1 engine mated to a INVECS*2–III sport mode 6-speed CVT. The Outlander is 4640mm long in comparison.

It will also feature a regenerative braking system (using braking power to generate electricity), electric power steering, improved aerodynamics and other low-fuel consumption technologies.

The Mitsubishi RVR, which will no doubt have a name change before it lands in Australia, will compete head to head with the likes of the Nissan Dualis (which also now starts at $24,990 for the front-wheel drive version) and perhaps even the Volkswagen Tiguan.

Interesting features include HID headlights, a panoramic glass roof (with LED illumination) and push-button ignition. On the inside there is a sense of sportiness with a black color scheme, silver highlights, and smooth, soft padding.

Additional equipment such as a terrestrial digital TV tuner linked to a HDD navigation system and a “link system” with USB, Bluetooth and other connections for music players and other external devices are available on higher models.

More details are due soon as the car will be officially unveiled at Geneva Motorshow

A nice looking crossover that’s for sure, would definitely take this over a dualis.

    • Innova

      …and Tiguan too !

      • sammo

        Computer says – NO!

      • CrustyTheClown

        Prezactly….

What the Tiguan is out of Golf

        =

        RVR is out of Lancer

  • Mitch

    Love the Jap fender mirror.

    • Valet Dabess

what… makes it look like an alien car. untenna sticking outta nowhere

  • Andronicus

actually not as terrible as i expected. now if they could just replace the colt they might have a good looking lineup.

    • CrustyTheClown

      COLT….

Isnt that a orphan, every brand seems to have one….

Have another on the way, some i electric job costing $60k???

Mind you they sell a near 60MPG superfrugal ULP Colt version in Europe called ClearTec, why not here?

  • Valet Dabess

nissan juke looks better, this colour looks weird too

  • henry

It would be better if it came with both 2WD and AWD

    • Peter Ms

It *does* come in 4Wd and 2WD, or at least it will here.

      • Shak

Ah no it doesnt and it wont when it comes out over here.

  • CrustyTheClown

Will be mid to high $20;s, not sure if there is market for this type of vehicle, how many Dualis do you see around, hardly none.

Shorter than a Lancer Hatch, and the Euro spec. smaller 1.8 donk fitted.

Gut feeling, waste of time, bring something else in Mitsu.

  • Hung Low

Be nice if it also had the option of the Lancer EVO running gear like previous models! Would put it right in the Forrester XT territory!

    • toxic_horse

Needs a AWD option to sell in OZ.

  • Fenno

Another “Claytons” 4wd (the 4wd you have when you dont have a 4wd)
Smaller than a Lancer, less power, probably similar economy (or more due to the awful Co-efficient drag). The only people I think that these types of cars would benefit would be Oldies with Bad hips. All they do is block the vision of other drivers with their ride height, handle woefully and seem to cost more for tyres etc than normal sedans. But hey its just an opinion.
