Volvo V60 Stationwagon Spy Photos

By Alborz Fallah |

Volvo may have been sold to the Chinese but development of new models is strong as ever. Fresh photos of the upcomming Volvo V60 Stationwagon came our way this morning.

The prototype was undergoing some testing at an ice-track during a lovely winter day in Sweden.

The Volvo V60 will compete head-on with Audi A4 Avant, BMW 3 series Touring and Mercedes C-Class Kombi buyers.

A release date is still unknown, however we believe it will share the same mechanical underpinnings as the Volvo 60 Sedan.

This will steal sales from the V70 won’t it?

you’d think maybe so, though the V70 is a big car, the complaint about the v50 is that the back is too small, so the V60 might steal more from the V50.

My guess, though, is that the V70′s days are kinda numbered. It is a good car, but the styling isnt as advanced as the XC70 which is a great all rounder, so I’d guess most people would go XC70 over the V70 (I might be wrong). I’ve never even seen a new V70 on the road. I suppose I’m saying that the V70 is aleady redundant to some extent, and I guess the V50 (also suffering from aged styling)will get that way once the V60 comes out. I still reckon volvo need a 4 door c30. If they had that, they could probably do away with the s40 which is now 6 years old, as much as I like them.

I’ve seen a few V70 driving around, they are quite handsome and good value for money compared to other Luxury car offerings.
Volvo at the moment are realigning their product lineup. My guess is the next-gen V70 will be renamed the V80 and I’ve also heard rumours the S40 and V50 will be dead next-gen, in an attempt to not step on the toes of the S/V60. Which Volvo have stated is a direct rival to the 3-series, I guess they no longer want to confuse the position of the S40 and S60 in the marketplace.

Speculation is rife amongst the various overseas Volvo enthusiast websites about exactly what this “V60” will be called. Yes V60 is the current working title but the speculation is that this V60 will in production become the new V50. The thinking is that to call it the V60 will almost certainly rule out an XC-version of the wagon – ie any XC-version of the V60 it can’t be called the XC60. The current V50 is not a world-wide best seller for Volvo – its considered too large in Europe and too small in the US. The S40, while also suffering the same marketing problems in Europe and the US, is (apparently) a big seller in Russia and China and so will probably survive.

So the speculation is that this coming “V60” will in fact become the new V50 and that a new 5-door version of the C30 will become the V30 to cover that end of the market.

I agree with Baddass’s original comment, yes I think this new V60/V50? will take sales from the V70. The V70 is a good value wagon – buts its only available in Oz as the T6 AWD (which is still a very good drive but heavy on fuel). The advantage this new wagon has is that it will offer a wider range of engines including diesel and the T6, and still with the option of AWD.

I know what you mean about doing away with the S40, but it is important as a 3-series rival. I don’t really know what a 4-door C30 would look like, but if there was one I think it would have to look quite different from the 3-door, or it would look strange.

yeah dont get me wrong, I love the s40. My missus got the T5 in 04, we just traded it on a new one in December and it is a really sweet car and great value for money. That said though, the old s60 wasnt that much bigger inside than the s40 (the bit of width made a lot of difference, but rear legroom was the same), and the length was about 4.7m against 4.4, most of that taken up by the bigger bonnet/bumper (I am not strange, I had an s60R at the same time as my missus had the s40T5, so they were in the garage together). I actually prefer the s40 to drive to the c30, but it seems they arent sexy enough (like me) for general consumption, and each of the c30 and the s60 will kill the s40 off leaving a bit of a void for a premium 4 door, 5 seat compact, IMO (depending on the size of the s60, of course)

I hope this offers more leg space for the driver than the V50. With 195cm, I have no chance to get myself behind the steering wheel of the V50. Very strange given that Scandinavians are rather tall on average.

None of them buy Volvo’s, they all have Germans.

      • Joe

Have you been to Sweden lately…..I have just come back from Sweden and they all drive Volvos or Saabs, some Japanese and Koreans but very few German cars. They like their cars comfortable….so that excludes the Germans, nice handling but that’s it. Rock hard seats, rock hard ride, and in the case of BMW, really ugly as well.

        • scatman

I just come back from 6 months work there, mostly german cars.

          • Martin

25% of all sold cars in Sweden are Volvos.

I suspect that the V60 eventually will replace the V50 and V70, also the S60 will replace the S40. The new S60/V60 series will have an engine range from 1.6L to 3.0L T6 and a wide price range. The question is will they all be available in Australia and NZ. The S40/V50 still have the old front, while the C30/C70 have been updated. Who knows what Geely plans for new models.

Yes, the XC70 is more popular than the V70, particularly here in the Pacific Northwest. The V50 seems to be more on par with the A3, and the S40 is smaller than the 3-series and nowhere near as premium as the A4 – I think that the 60-series wagon is a good thing overall. Now, if we can just refrain from plastic cladding and taller suspension…

Volvo are very capable of making very good cars but they are consistently let down in recent years by their marketing, especially here in Australia. I’ll be very interested to see how well the new V60 is marketed, especially compared with the rest of the Volvo range.

I don’t think the Chinese sale has hurt Volvo too much – many of my friends who don’t work in the industry are completely unaware of it.
