Land Rover open to new Range Rover model to take on Bentayga

Land Rover management is open to the idea of a new range-topping Range Rover model to take on the likes of the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce's upcoming crossover.

Automotive News Europe asked Gerry McGovern, head of design at Land Rover, at the publication's annual congress event if it was considering entering the super-luxury crossover segment.

"Why not?" replied McGovern. "We've realised that the Range Rover has got this big expanse across its price range, so it's not a very big step to get into Bentayga country."

The Bentley Bentayga and the long-wheelbase Range Rover are roughly the same length, meaning a new super luxurious Range Rover model could well be around the same size.

McGovern would be comfortable with that, stating, "I would argue you could have two Range Rovers exactly the same size but if they had two personalities then they would both have equal appeal but to different customers".

The design director says the company is keen to expand the Range Rover range further, having recently added the Velar to fill to gap between the Evoque and Sport.

So far, the Bentayga has been an unquestioned sales success for the Volkswagen-owned luxury marque. Last year, the company sold a record 11,023 cars, half of which were Bentaygas.
