The midi-MPV segment is growing and Hyundai is not letting the VW Touran and Opel Zafira play alone.  First shown in Geneva 2008 as the HED-5 Concept, the production version is now on the roads in Northern Scandinavia for some cold weather testing.

Compared to the Concept the production car is toned down a lot but still has some of the key design elements, like the a-pillar.

This prototype is powered by the U-II 1.7 litre diesel engine that was first shown with the ix35 in Frankfurt in September 2009. That new engine delivers some 86kW of power and 255 Nm of torque. It’s also possible that the 2.0 litre diesel with 101kW and 320 Nm of torque will find its way under the hood. Of course there will be some petrol versions as well.

What this new MPV will be called and when its public debut will be is still unclear.

A replacement for the unloved Hyundai Lavita that was sold in Australia for a brief period of time?? Probably.

Not sure if I like that kink in the rear door’s waistline of the back window though….

Will we see it in Australia?? You’d have to think Hyundai and Kia would be a little worried with the overlapping of some of their models. We already have the Kia Rondo and while it sell’s in decent numbers, it’s not like it’s setting the world on fire either.

Lavita/Matrix is the Elantra MPV that never got to see US soil.

Hyundai is going to make the Matrix/Lavita into a next Gen i30 MPV the last I heard. That means they must be developing the i30 Hatch somewhere.

Turns out they already made the i30 hatch a few years ago when the i30 was first released

Its due for a replacement soon enough. Current i30 is just an in between car, between the past and Next Gen i30. Its due to be replaced in 2012 anyway, and since the Elantra will be replaced a year early i30 will most likely be replaced a year early too.

Well, its a Next Gen Elantra Touring possible next gen i30.

      Let ne Explain:

      1. Its been greenlighted for US sale after the response at the LA Auto Show 3 years ago.

      2. This is a Crossover, and next Gen Eantra Touring is supposed to be a C-segment Crossover.

      3. This s a C segment, as you can clearly see. Hyundai takes a convoy of cars in that segment it wants to exceed benchmarks on and meet benchmarks on. C-Segment for them would be anything from a Cruze to a SAAB 9-3. There are cars that are in the convoy visible in one of the pics: A Cruze, and a Wagon from VW, SAAB, or BMW.

      4. They are replacing the Elantra almost a year and a half early in the US, so it wouldnt be a shock if i30 ges replaced a year or so earlier than scheduled too.

      5. It has a Hexagonal Grille, and the current i-range products dont (except: ix-35). It Would look out of place as a variant of a current generation Model.

This will probabaly get sold as a 2012 Elantra Touring, sometime next year here, and you guys will probably get it as a version of next Gen i30.

But this is a compact MPV/Minivan, not a wagon.

I do know that the current Hyundai i30 wagon is sold in the US as the Hyundai Elantra Touring, but to replace a wagon with an MPV/Minivan, doesn’t make sense.

They may sell this in the US, but not badged as the Elantra Touring.

          says:

In the US it wouldnt be considered an MPV, as many Americans expect MPVs to have sliding rear doors like a minivan. This would be a C-Segment hatch like Pontiac Vibe or Toyota Matrix here. Americans dont like Wagons, and lower to the ground hatches like: i30, Mazda 3, Impreza get more of a limited cult fan base as opposed to large volume sales.

Toyota Matrix in most of the world would be an MPV, here its a hatch or term thats growing in Acceptance more and more “Small Crossover”. Its the best selling of the C-Segment hatches here, and this added to the mix would shake the market up big time.

Hyundai marketing this as a small eco crossover like Toyota and Suzuki does here would be smart. You have SX4 and Matrix, but people want more style like window kinks, etc… and superior fuel economy; features that’s missing from SX4 and Matrix.

Look at KIA Soul and Honda Fit/Jazz. They never say hatch in advertising. They say “small car, small crossover, this versatile vehicle, etc….” or note that this car has 5 doors. Hatch is still kind of a dirty word here, but not as dirty as wagon or estate. However, if it has 3 doors its perfectly fine to call it a hatch for most people.

We are both right. This will be an MPV for you guys, and a hatch/small crossover for us.

This is more appropriate as an Elantra Touring for the US audience than the i30CW we have now.

This would sell like hotcakes here in the US, as people lke these C-Segment hatches.

Looks much more modern than the tragic Trajet. But what is going on with that rear door kink? It’s like a Vauxhall Meriva gone wrong.

Isn’t this just the Kia Rondo? Why would they drop the Rondo [just speculation right now]if they are just renaming it as a Hyundai?

        says:

No they are dropping the Rondo in the US market. That’s been confirmed. The Rondo will get replaced with a Forte/Cerrato Hatch in the US.

        The Design is definately Hyundai.

        1. Those are Hyundai side mirrors.

        2. The rear lights on KIAs are very distinctive and would show up even with camo.

3, The rear lights on Hyundais are distinctive and would show up in camo, and guess what, Those are Hyundai Rear Lights.

This is the coming Elantra hatch I hear some US Hyundai dealers talking about.

      says:

OK, let’s clear up the stuff about Rondo first. The March edition of Automobile suggests that the Kia Sedona and Rondo will be replaced by the one car. However the size that’s described there [just bigger than a Ford C-max] suggests it’s actually Rondo-sized. Is the proposed car just Kia’s version of this car above? Maybe a Rondo by another name. Bear in mind that Rondo has done well in Europe and in Canada, so cutting it out completely might be a bit over the top. Kia’s previous declarations [about the Sedona or Carnival] have been that the market for large MPVs has been replaced by large SUVs. They haven’t said anything about mid or compact sized MPVs like this.

However, this car above, which has now been spotted several times over the past fortnight, is definitely a Hyundai. It even had a government registration sticker saying so in one spy pic ;D We know a lot about the Hyundai car now. There’s a number of articles explaining this and also dissecting the spy pics at http://www.users.on.net/~pbm/P.....chive.html

Look for articles on i-Mode, i30 MPV, HED-5. This vehicle is also known as the iM30, just to confuse things further.

According to a source. This will be a Nex Gen i30 MPV, and will be a 2012 MY Model. The next Gen i20 MPV will come out before this, and so far it has avoided spyshots. i20 MPV is supposed to debut this year, and hit the streets as an MY 11. I expect i20MPV to look very similar to this, and I hope it becomes an Accent 5 door too, as I have been talking to Hyundai about trying to create a 5 door Accent model.

      Revised comment for moderator:

OK. Let’s clarify this for all:

      http://www.users.on.net/~pbm/P….._2012.html

There are [so far] two separate corroborating reports in the Dutch motoring media, of a meeting with high-level Hyundai administrators in Rome, both reporting the same plan. Yes there will be an i30 MPV in 2012, maybe by Dec 2011, and this is certainly it [we know what it is because it had it marked on government reg. papers on the windscreen when parked in Hyundai design HQ in Germany. I can find the photo of said papers if you really want evidence]. Yes it’s an MPV, as I reported some time ago – not a hatch or a wagon. Yes, it appears it will be based on the next generation i30. That would be logical, given the timetable for changeover of models.

If you want to call it a crossover, that’s fine, and Hyundai may well do so by then. Everything’s a crossover now :)

And as to Kia, see my comment above on 11 Feb.

      Peter
