2018 Nissan Leaf grille teased ahead of September unveiling

The front end of the new Nissan Leaf has been teased ahead of the car's debut later this year.

Nissan confirmed on its Twitter account the second-generation Leaf will be unveiled on September 6, 2017. Accompanying this tweet was an artistic take on the new car's grille (below).

The company has also updated the header image for its Twitter profile (above), and this photo gives us a better look at the new Leaf's front end design, with its fake grille and headlights all lit up.

A prototype of the second-generation Leaf was spied late last month. While the new car retains the taller-than-average hatchback profile of the current vehicle, it has sharper detailing and elements from the 2015 IDS concept.

Under the skin, the new Leaf is said to feature an improved electric drivetrain and battery pack, with driving range upped to between 300 and 400 kilometres.

This is significantly more than the 135km US EPA range quoted for the current car's 24kWh battery, or the 172km promised by the 30kWh option not sold locally.

It will also allow the Leaf to compete on an equal footing with the Chevrolet Bolt, which has a 383km range rating, and the Tesla Model 3, which promises at least 345km between charges.

In addition to the improved range, the new Leaf will also be available with Nissan's first-generation ProPilot self-driving system, which allows the car to steer, brake and accelerate for itself within a single highway lane.

Australia

Nissan Australia has previously confirmed the new Leaf will be part of the local range, although timing has yet to be confirmed.
