Ferrari 488 ‘Speciale’ spied

A hotter version of the Ferrari 488 has been spied undergoing testing on and around the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

Compared to the regular 488 GTB, this 488 prototype has a body wrap hugging covering the doors, front bumper, rear fenders, boot lid, and the front half of the bonnet.

The rear windscreen, which typically shows off the twin-turbo V8, has been completely covered, and there's a red pull strap attached to the lower air intake.

We expect the production version to also feature different alloy wheels, modified front and rear bumpers, and a revised aerodynamics kit.

It's not known what name the higher performance variant of the 488 will take, but if the company chooses something from the brand's past, Speciale and GTO are both likely candidates. Of course, the Italian supercar maker could choose something new entirely.

Given the lack of serious body modifications, it's unlikely this is a prototype for the long-rumoured Dino successor.

The 488 has been in the news lately, with the car's 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 engine picking up the 2017 International Engine of the Year gong, following its victory in the 2016 competition.

It's almost inevitable this new variant of the 488 will feature more power and torque than the 492kW/760Nm on offer in the 488 GTB coupe and Spider.

Performance should also be enhanced by a carbon-fibre diet, which will shave precious kilos from the car.
