Ferrari wins International Engine of the Year award for second year in a row

The Ferrari 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 engine has won the 2017 International Engine of Year award, holding onto the crown it captured in 2016.

This year the Ferrari motor, used in the 488 supercar, edged out the 3.0-litre flat-six employed by the Porsche 911 range, as well the BMW i8's petrol-electric drivetrain, the 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder from the Audi RS3 and TT RS, Ford's turbocharged 1.0-litre triple, the PSA Group's 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo, and the Porsche 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine from the 718 range.

Both BMW i8's powertrain and the Ford 1.0-litre have previously won the award. Again, no diesel engines won any of the available categories.

The second-generation Honda NSX's 3.5-litre hybrid drivetrain won the New Engine of the Year award. It's the company's first gong in 11 years, and the only prize awarded to an Asian manufacturer this year. Ford and Tesla were the only other winners from outside of Europe.

Voted on by a jury of 58 motoring journalists from all over the world, the awards are in their 19th year and are run annually by Engine Technology International Magazine.

So far four engines have managed to win in consecutive years, with the BMW V10 used in the M5 doing the double in 2005 and 2006. The Bavarian automaker followed this up with another double in 2007 and 2008, this time with its 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six.

Volkswagen's 1.4-litre Twincharger engine, with a supercharger and turbocharger, carried away the award in 2009 and 2010. Ford's 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, used in the Fiesta and other vehicles, is the only engine to win the main gong three years running in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
