Hyundai Australia posts record January sales

By Tim Beissmann |

Hyundai Motor Company Australia has posted is best January sales result since the brand arrived in Australia in 1986.

Soaring 67.7 percent over its January 2009 effort, Hyundai sold 6208 units and recorded an 8.3 percent market share, equalling its best ever monthly result since the wholly owned Hyundai Motor Company Australia subsidiary was created in 2003.

Hyundai’s director of sales, Damien Meredith, said some of the local highlights included the Getz ranking first in the light car segment (1717 sales, 16.5 percent market share), the iLoad recording its best ever sales result and market share (592, 30.8 percent), and the Hyundai brand ranking first in Tasmania.

“The team at Hyundai and the Hyundai dealer network are thrilled with the start to 2010. This month we launch the all-new ix35 compact SUV into the Australian market and we have other exciting all-new products on the way soon,” Mr Meredith said.

One of those is the all-new YF/Sonata sedan which was South Korea’s best selling domestic model with 17,464 sales for the first month of the year.

Globally, Hyundai Motor Company’s sales increased 50.4 percent over January 2009, led by strong domestic sales, increased exports and a 56 percent rise in sales from overseas plants.

    Getz Motor Company?

I dare Hyundai and Kia to sell its vehicles at the SAME price as the Jappers.

They are buying market share with cheapest prices on the market.

Gut feeling they are going to end up in no-mans-land, the Chinese will be lower and the Japanese will not be much higher.

Happened in the Earthmoving field, the Japanese wont give up market without a fight, and the Chinese are keen and ready to attack, the Koreans have the most to lose…

    • daiso

their engines and chassis technolgies are world class.(eg. their R-engine)

    • Martin

And I bet you, Nankano, have thoroughly studied the market far better than Hyundai-Kia themselves. They aren’t stupid, they know how to make money and they will continue doing so regardless of what people like you think you know.

    • JEKYL & HYDE

what jappers in particular? most imported cars are thai/koren built now anyway(honda, nissan, toyota, mazda).only a handful of jap made models get near australia.if the koreans can still make the black with their current prices, happy days to them.china might be good at making copies of cars, but design and desire(not to mention crash worthness) isn’t there…

      Wake up mate..!

And read “New vehicle sales up 11.7 percent in January” post in CA

      Top 10 sales by model:
      Holden Commodore – 3241
      Mazda3 – 3223
      Toyota Hilux – 2997
      Toyota Corolla – 2711
      Ford Falcon – 2318
      Holden Cruze – 2218
      Hyundai i30 – 2116
      Hyundai Getz – 1717
      Mitsubishi Lancer – 1588
      Toyota Yaris – 1562

i30 was sold more than Getz….and do u think how many Japanese cars are in i30′s price range, none?

“I dare Hyundai and Kia to sell its vehicles at the SAME price as the Jappers”
What a rediculous thing to say. Value for money is always going to be a contributing factor to the sucess of a company.

  • Callous Aussie

Wow there are some stupid comments regarding this brand (and KIA). Hyundai actually have one of the highest customer satisfaction levels “globally”. They are number two in the USA behind Lexus and with good reason. Good value for money, quality built and reliable.

There are still people b!tching about the price of the Sorento and yet when you look at what comes standard it is exceptional value against its competition.

One day ,at least a proportion of you will wake up and realise they now do world class product. The Cerato is now $18,990 drive away and I can tell you first hand that it murders the Corolla for power, ride and build quality and interior/boot space. yet it is 4 k cheaper. So how are they eroding the price gap? I can buy a i30 diesel up here for the same price as a Corolla base model. Again, where is this $1000 gap?

Now go and price the iLoad against its competitors. Again, where is this level pricing? Hyundai and KIA are winning awards the world over against the established marks. Some of the people that vote on these cars once held a similar prejudice to what I see in these forums. They got over it.

If you don’t like the vehicles come out and say it instead of making up crap. The Koreans have a lot to be proud of. They have moved ahead in big leaps in the past 5 years and the winners are us. We would happily own any of the vehicles that Hyundai and Kia currently sell here in Australia. Infact we do.

I agree 100%. 10 years ago I would not look at Hyundai or Kia, today it will be my first choice. You should see the new Kia ceed only sold in Europe. Excellent car and I nearly forgot comes with 7 years warranty!!!

    • Robin Graves

For once I agree with every single word you said.

    • Mark G

Ew… but the Cerato still has an ancient 4 speed auto. Most Japs (except Corolla) have moved to 5 speeds or CVTs.

      • RD

Ew…but the Ford Focus, Nissan Tiida, Suzuki SX4 (and Swift) and Subaru Impreza still have ‘ancient 4 speed autos’ as well. Your point?

        • Mark G

My point is that the Cerato is nothing special, and certainly not world class. A world class car in 2010 does not still use a 4 speed auto. As for the examples you mentioned, the SX4 now has CVT, and the Nissan Tiida is in a different class – really one (or perhaps one half) class below (it really is more of a Yaris/Barina sedan competitor). FYI, Mazda3 & Civic both have 5 speeds, Lancer has CVT, and Cruze even has a 6 speed.

  • ABMPSV

Hyundai and Kia improved a lot. 10 years ago I would not even look, but today it will be my first choice. In Europe Kia ceed is and excellent car with 7 years warranty!!

Hyundai will be a superior Luxury Company one day with hard work, You guys need Genesis. What a sweet product you guys are missing out on. They need to hurry up with those pans to sell more globally.

KIA=the Replacement for Toyota. Pass the Toyota Dealership and Go directly straight to KIA!!!!!!!

    • Robin Graves

Problem is right hand drive. Once they start making right hand drive Genesis then they will sell them here. They really need a V8 Genesis coupe, maybe not a mid engine one like Rhys Millen’s but a standard Tau V8 in the front of the Genesis coupe would be an instant hero car for the brand, something they really need to boost image. Look at what the R32 Skyline GT-R did for Nissan back in 1989.

      • HyundaiSmoke

They should do that everywhere, now that would be sweet!!!!

    The Forte/Cerrato:

    1. Its a great car it nukes Corolla and Civic, the problem is people are broke right now. Hence, sales are poor in some markets like the US. For that segment you need at least 7500-8000 sales a month to be relevant, here it only sells 4K a month.

    2. KIA needs to do like a marketing campaign to get people to try it, like the Fiesta Movement campaign from Ford. If they like C-segs once they try it they likely will buy it.

    3. The car was renamed in some markets, and once you rename a car in markets like the US you have to start straight from scratch again with your buyers etc…

That was GMs biggest problem before the crisis. They had a car and changed the name of it every 5 years and didnt develop it more and started from scratch. A lot of Americans are tired of that, and this is why its a very bad time for KIA to change the name on the car, even though I know it was for the better. I like the name Forte, I just think it was a bad time to change the name on a product you sold 9000 a (which was KIAs top selling US Product) month normally on in a bad economy.

Hyundai products have always been very satisfactory with negligible negatives. The stupendous growth of the brand in the global market is the clear indicator of their worth.
