Toyota sales rise again in January

By Matt Brogan |

Toyota Australia’s January sales were up 8.5 per cent compared with the same month last year, according to official figures released today. The figures show Toyota sold a total of 14,500 vehicles for the month, almost 39 per cent more than any other brand. The figure places Toyota some 4,000 units ahead of its nearest rival.

In January, Camry, HiLux 4×4, HiLux 4×2, LandCruiser 200 Series, HiAce van and HiAce bus were the top-selling Toyota vehicles in their respective segments. Prius was the best-selling hybrid vehicle.

Toyota Australia senior executive director sales and marketing, Mr David Buttner, said the company and its dealers were positive about the outlook for 2010.

“Our order bank is strong – and growing – and our dealer confidence is high,” said Mr Buttner.

“We are also on the verge of launching one of the most significant cars in Australia’s automotive history – the first locally produced hybrid car, Hybrid Camry.”

Toyota has topped the sales charts every single month since April 2005.

  • David T

Small compensation for the 16% drop in US sales (in a market up by 6%), which is Toyota’s biggest market, and represents a drop of about 20,000 sales.

  • Lancer black

Corolla didnt top its segment as always? thats interesting.

    • Camry lover

Must have been a supply issue, as that is very strange.

    • Andrew M

      What topped the corolla then????
Cruze, lancer or the always up there mazda 3??

      • Andrew M

Oh and also what topped the Prado???

Oh and also the Yaris?? didnt that too lead its class??

      • Reality

        Mazda 3 (3,223)
        Corolla (2,711)
        Cruze (2,218)

        From another website.

It could be that people who would have bought the Corolla because it was cheaper were able to pony up the money for a Mazda 3 thanks to the 50% government rebate? I’m not sure but does VFACTS record sales on delivery or when the car was ordered?

        • The Other Brad

The 50% government rebate finished last year didn’t it? The 5% drop in import tariff came in this year though. I remember a Mazda press release regarding a drop in price on various models but I don’t remember anything coming from Toyota.

Saw something about them complaining about the suggestion of dropping the tariff a few years back though. Said it would damage the local car manufacturing industry.

  • JEKYL & HYDE

holden up by 20%,ford up,toyota up….big deal, like a said before, wait till the investment allowance cars are delivered, then wait and see,the cracks are starting now…

  • mh2408

That’s a very vague report. How about some actual statistics.

  • David T

So Toyota was up 8.5% in a market that was up 11.6% overall.

That actually means Toyota lost market share.

Toyota are really desperate for positive media aren’t they? Fancy putting spin on this loss, to claim some self praise.

    • Family Guy

Correct, Market share dropped from 20% to 19.5% (taken from another auto site)

  • sammo

Toyota’s are so boring, why do people keep buying them??

    • Camry lover

      Because they have elegant styling.

  • HyundaiSmoke

Yeah elegant for 1978, 1992, and 2001 Camry Lover. Yeah that was a Gen Y crack on Boomers.

Im tied of this GM #2 here, and I know most of you are too!!!!

    • Camry lover

Toyota makes very attractive, understated vehicles. Toyotas exude rich levels of elegance, class, quality and reliability. I think everyone should better appreciate the designs Toyota has to offer.

I seem to be at odds with most other Car Advice readers for some reason. Maybe Car Advice readers do not fancy the vehicles that Toyota manufactures, but I believe that most people in this country do as Toyota seem to sell quite well here.

      • HyundaiSmoke

Actually CamryLover, I think Toyota would be better off of they followed Hyundai upmarket.

        Let me explain:

Toyota needs a new and fresh mission, and with Scion and Diahatsu fulfilling Toyota’s old role in many markets, and Lexus now competing with Benz. I think Toyota can pull themselves out of the problems they are headed for by moving upmarket to be a Near Luxury Company.

Toyota can restyle itself in a fresher more elegant way, providing this affordable upmarket feel like the Old School Lexus but in a new age, and prices higher than they are now, but cheaper than Opel and Buick, like Hyundai is doing. That also means cars like the Yaris and Corolla are going to have to get leather as an option eventually on a Global scale.

You guys have become like “Old GM” You have to many companies serving the same purpose with products cannibalizing each other on the same platforms and price points=Toyota, Scion, Dihatsu.

Toyota has to make fundamental change, and change quickly if it wants to stop being treated like GM #2.

        • SteveH

You’re right HS. You should get a position on the board at Toyota as they obviously have no idea what they have been doing over the past few years…

  • Matt

“the first locally produced hybrid car, Hybrid Camry”

They mean the first locally bolted together hybrid from parts made overseas and shipped here

    • Camry lover

That’s actually incorrect. Toyota actually stamps their own panels using dies in the Altona factory. Please be careful where you obtain your reference material from.

      • The Real Truth

The hybrid components are pretty much all imported.

        • Camry lover

I stand corrected. I was under the impression that they are going to be produced here as the Government generously donated $70 million to Toyota to manufacture the hybrid drivetrain for the ACV40R series Camry.

  • HyundaiSmoke

Toyota, You Lie!!! Yeah the US Government thinks Toyota might be lying about problems, and there are stiff penalities behind that; like Jailings.

    Toyota=Bad Guys!!!

    • The Real Car Fanatic

Cause no other car company lies do they?

      • HyundaiSmoke

Well other companies do including Hyundai, but its time for Toyota to get beat up on. Then VW, then Ford then Hyundai. This will take about 30 years, and Hyundai wll be the last to get beat upon, then the Chinese, Malaysians and Indians will be known to have the best cars, that everybody has to have.

You guys, know bashing the #1 company is an American Pastime.

        • The Real Car Fanatic

Yeah but we aren’t Americans, so go back to the donut shop septic!

          • HyundaiSmoke

Well, hey the rest of the world is following our example right now arent they. HyundaiSmoke is global and on every global Automotive Website Ive been to, the investigation of Toyota is story number 1.

          • Al Juraj

You’re digging a hole for yourself HyundaiSmoke.

          • Camry lover

(This message is to The Real Car Fanatic):

Please do not make personal attacks towards other users of this site. How would you like someone to call you an offensive name?

    • SteveH

Hyundai, I think you need to get off the smoke

  • HyundaiSmoke

Newsflash: Steve Wosniak Apple Co-Founder says,

“My Prius has unintended acceleration on Cruise Control, and I think from a professional point of view its a software problem.”

    -Source:

    Bloomberg Asia

    • Camry lover

Since when is Steve Wosniak a reliable source?

If you listen to what the Toyota executives say, this recall is only a minor problem. It is not emblematic of Toyota in general—a reliable automaker.

  • trackdaze

Could it be the echo’s of the flurry of numbats that took up the 50% tax deductibility incentive not bothering to do their sums on their trade in’s nor realising it’ll bite when they turn the vehicle over never mind the tarrif reduction from january 1?, The brand tragics that ordered a heavier, slower Prado before the price was even known or a vehicle available for testing or, the more savy of those that saw through all the smoke and mirrors and bought an 09 plate for at least 15% less!?

Please, please tell me all those that bought vehicles in january paid at least 15% less? I dont want to hear you bought on the lure of free floor mats & an aerosol can full of paint protection?
