BMW Vision EfficientDynamics production possible by 2013

By Tim Beissmann |

Reports from automotive website Edmunds Inside Line suggest that BMW is seriously considering a production version of its Vision EfficientDynamics 2+2 plug-in hybrid concept that was unveiled at last September’s Frankfurt Auto Show.

An executive source from within BMW said production volume of the Vision would most likely be between 5000 and 10,000 units, making it “quite probably” the brand’s second true supercar after the Giugiaro M1.

The 265kW/800Nm hybrid powertrain – which comprises a range-extending three-cylinder diesel engine, a lithium-polymer battery stack and two electric motors – will remain mostly unchanged. As BMW’s engineers continue to work on the prototype, however, they are confident that its quoted 4.8 0-100km/h sprint time will be sharpened by production time.

Two things will change for sure if the Vision does make production.

The first is all the fancy synthetic glass, which will be replaced by more familiar materials, although the BMW source was hopeful it would not push its weight too far above the sub-1360kg concept.

The second change will be the name.

“That name that the marketing people forced on us, that’s going to change for sure,” Edmunds’ source said.

With the Audi e-tron and Mercedes-Benz SLS electric already lined-up for production, a similar super-green supercar from the Bavarians as early as 2013 would come as no surprise at all.

YAWN Why are car companies worrying about Hybrids? They are such a waste of time and money!

    • Robin Graves

Not if they are done right like this. Current hybrids are a joke because they are just like a badge for the psuedo-greenies to wear, but this car has the figures to back it up. Only thing it will be lacking is a nice engine note, something that a 3cyl diesel definitely does not have!

just looking @ the 3rd photo wonder if one would fit into my garage? with the doors open like they r in the pic ?? they might hit the roof…lol but bloody nice looking car though….and yeah i dont want a hybrid one either….

Its good to see BMW embracing EV technology. The Mini-E was nice, but this is just awesome

Thats not even that quick – 4.8 seconds I can name heaps of quicker cars. F6 for starters, EVO 5 etc

    • lazybones

True, you’d expect 4.8 nano seconds from 800Nm. But its still in the nice sub 5 second category, which is not shared by many Hybrids.

What are you going on about. A 4.8 time is astounding for a hybrid with a 3 cylinder. And besides a stock F6 could not acheive below 4.9. They asked a lot of test drivers and frost himself and the best they could get was 5.0 second flat. Love the F6 but facts are facts.

I think the W200 claimed 0-100 in 4.7 seconds too didn’t it Mr Hanson?

If there was really a god the best cars wouldn’t be the most expensive!

As BMW have binned their hydrogen tech, they will be itching to get a hybrid statement in production. Maybe this is it?
