PSA Peugeot Citroen stung by Toyota’s European recall
French vehicle manufacturer PSA Peugeot Citroen will recall close to 100,000 cars built in the same factory as the defective Toyota Aygo after experiencing the same accelerator-related problems.
Around 200,000 Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 city cars are assembled each year mostly for the European market at the Toyota Peugeot Citroen Automobile plant in Kolin, 60km east of Prague, Czech Republic.
Developed by Toyota in the only PSA-Toyota joint venture, the cars wearing French badging are structurally very similar to the Aygo and need to be recalled to fix the same problem.
“For Peugeot 107s and Citroen C1s, we are going to carry out an identical campaign as Toyota,” a PSA spokesman said.
“We are at the investigation phase to establish which phase of production is concerned.” PSA is yet to announce when the recall will be launched and how many vehicles are affected.
As many as 1.8 million Toyota vehicles were recalled in Europe last Friday and included eight models with build dates ranging from February 2005 to January 2010.
The top-selling Yaris, along with the Auris, Avensis, Aygo, Corolla, iQ, RAV4, and Verso, are among the latest recall, taking the global tally to almost eight million vehicles. No Lexus models were included in the European recall, and as far as Toyota Europe is aware, no accidents have resulted from the accelerator problem.
Toyota production in Europe will not be suspended as it has already sourced different parts to combat the issue.
