Mahindra sort of extends warranty

Indian brand Mahindra has improved the after-sales care on its XUV500 SUV in an attempt to gain some traction in Australia's hugely competitive market.

The XUV500 gets five years of free roadside assistance and three years of capped-price servicing ($2740 over the term, total), somewhat offsetting the sub-par six-month/10,000km intervals.

There's also a five-year "limited" warranty. This comprises the regular three-year/100,000km warranty with a two-year extension for any powertrain issues beyond this (so long as you're still under 100,000km by the end of year five).

The XUV500 is a seven-seat SUV with either 4x2 or 4x4 configurations, both using a 103kW/330Nm 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine matched to six-speed manual or six-speed Aisin automatic transmissions. The towing capacity is 2500kg.

Given Mahindra is among the world's biggest heavy machinery brands, the XUV500 is likely to prove mechanically tough.

Standard equipment includes leather seats, sat-nav, rear-view camera and air-conditioning for three rows. Pricing is reasonably sharp - between $29,900 and $34,900 drive-away.

Mahindra also recently opened a new dealership in Brisbane at Newstead, bringing the total number of Mahindra Automotive dealers to 40 across Australia.

Given the stiff competition in the seven-seat SUV class, and the sharp pricing of offerings such as the Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, the Indian brand has its work cut out.
