Google’s Android to underpin Volvo, Audi infotainment tech

Forget Android Auto as you know it right now. Google's next leap into automotive infotainment will be right there in the dash before you've even connected your phone.

The tech giant has today announced its platform will form the basis of next-generation infotainment for Volvo and Audi.

The news follows January's Consumer Electronics Show demonstration of the Android operating system customised for a Tesla, and, last year, for the Maserati Ghibli.

Google has also worked previously with Chrysler to build a version of its UConnect interface on top of the latest Android version, 7.0 'Nougat', although it is unclear if that project forms part of this latest development.

Android, easily the world's most popular mobile operating system - courtesy of a low cost of entry into the world of Android-powered devices - has already been heavily integrated with most modern cars for a number of years now, thanks to the Android Auto platform.

This week, Android will make its fully integrated automotive debut at Google's I/O developer conference, where we'll also learn more about the company's other projects over the year ahead.

As the images here show, manufacturers will be able to retain the design themes of their own infotainment systems, with Android merely forming the basis; the code behind the curtain.

"Today, Audi and Volvo announced they will build Android into their next generation of cars," Google said on its blog.

"That means your car’s built-in infotainment system could allow you to control your air conditioning, sunroof, and windows, find the nearest restaurant with Google Maps, listen to Spotify or NPR, or just ask your Google Assistant for help—even when you leave your phone behind."

Watch for the new platform to be previewed at the I/O event on May 17 and 18.

What do you think of having your car's entire infotainment system powered by Google?
