2018 Lamborghini Urus twin-turbo V8 to have around 485kW

Further details about the Lamborghini Urus crossover have been divulged by the company's chief, Stefano Domenicali.

The Lamborghini CEO has told Automotive News the Urus will initially be available with a twin-turbo V8 with around 485kW of power.

The Urus crossover will be launched near the end of 2017, and will go on sale in Europe during the second quarter of 2018. US sales are due to commence in the third quarter, with Australian sales likely to begin in latter half of the year.

About a year later after its launch, Lamborghini will launch a plug-in hybrid version of its big-money crossover. The plug-in hybrid will feature the same twin-turbo V8 engine.

Under the skin, the Urus is expected to use a version of the Volkswagen Group's MLB platform for front- and all-wheel drive vehicles. As such, the Urus will be closely related to the Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga.

Domenicali expects the company to crank out around 1000 Urus crossovers in the first year, with production rising to 3500 per annum from 2019 onwards.

The Lamborghini boss said it's possible to increase production still further if demand warrants it. The Urus will be produced at the company's factory at recently expanded Lamborghini's Sant’Agata Bolognese factory.

If everything goes according to plan, the Urus will double Lamborghini's annual sales, with the company capping output of the Huracan and Aventador sports car to around 3500 annually.
