Japanese cars dominate pre-owned vehicles awards

By Tim Beissmann |

Japanese cars have dominated the inaugural WheelsTV pre-owned vehicle (POV) awards in the US, with Toyota, Honda and Lexus sharing the five top awards.

The WheelsTV POV of the Year awards recognise pre-owned vehicles that best exemplify enduring reliability, performance, comfort, safety and quality.

Winners are determined through independent testing, consumer feedback and behind-the-wheel evaluations by a panel of judges, including the motoring writers, editors and analysts.

The 2010 POV of the Year winners list:

  • Small car: 2007-2008 Honda Fit (Jazz)
  • Family sedan: 2003-2007 Honda Accord
  • SUV: 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner
  • Hybrid: 2004-2009 Toyota Prius
  • Sporty car: 2002-2009 Lexus SC

I figured the requirement for this would have been ‘the vehicle has to be at least 10 years old’ or something similar.

Anyway I’d like to see how this awards group goes in the next 5-10 with the drop in Toyotas reliability?

As the saying goes: ‘They don’t make ‘em like they used too!’

Definitely not to Hyundai for sure LOL!

Um the Honda Fit is made in Japan, but Australia’s Honda Jazz is made in Thialand. To bad Honda couldn’t follow in Mazda’s steps, as they make the Mazda 3 in Japan for worldwide distribution.

It would have cost more. Thailand has an FTA with Australia, and this means the cars dont attract a tariff at all.

… but Mazda are moving the 2 production (for Aust) to Thailand.

I was working with Honda years ago when some of the Thai sourced cars arrived – still exception quality control.

@whitbomb: Our awards were based on the top rated vehicles of their generation and having the top rating in all their categories (reliability, dependability, safety, etc.). The 03-07 Honda Accord was our overall winner.

@ohsotorque: Hyundai isn’t far from being a contender as is Kia. Surprising to hear but their quality has really come a long way, they just haven’t been in the game long enough to compete.

The Honda Fit we awarded was actually the US version but I suppose the writer wanted to specify the Jazz to localize the article a bit. No harm done though as the Australian version receives the same top scores!
