2018 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 mule spied

A mule for the new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 has been spotted undergoing testing on the Nurburgring Norschleife.

The mule has a more aggressive aero kit, including a large rear wing, cross-drilled brakes, and extensions to the wheel arch lips

In an interview Car and Driver, Andreas Preuninger, director of special vehicle projects at Porsche, noted "natural aspiration is one of [the] main selling propositions" of Porsche's GT-branded vehicles.

In all likelihood, the new GT4 will be powered by a detuned version of the 4.0-litre flat-six used in the 911 GT3, where the motor develops 368kW of power and 460Nm of torque. A hastily deleted Instagram post from Porsche Centre Brisbane hinted as much back in February.

The rest of the facelifted 718 Boxster and Cayman range has been shifted from flat-six engines to turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engines.

Preuninger also noted "it’s the right thing to do" to offer GT buyers the option of a dual-clutch transmission or a manual, with the latter better suited to people for whom track times aren't a consideration.

The previous Cayman GT4 was fitted exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission.

Speculation has it the new Cayman GT4 may also gain RS badging, either as part of an upgrade pack or as standard.
